Performance Mods for the v6?

MarkinWMich, thanks for what seems like the most likely answer. Had a hunch that might be the reality, but never having much experience with v6 motors in the past, guess I was hoping to be surprised. Most of my driving these days definitely falls into the "putzing" category and for the few times I might like to be more aggressive, I just don't think major changes would be worth it, especially considering the big expense for real gains.

Sure is funny how much milder this 270-hp vehicle feels than my old 245-hp v8 Tundra. Guess I'll try to learn to be happy with getting good fuel mileage, and an otherwise really nice ride! Loving this site, sorry for asking about matters already covered, but I appreciate the info.

BTW, as for somebody putting diesel into a gas engine, well I know for sure the inverse is a really, really bad idea. All I'll say is, green pump handles should be allowed only for diesel fuel.

As you noted, the 4.6L V8 in the Tundra is Gutless. This would be the V8 that toyota would have put in the 5th gen, if they were going to do so, and it would likely be gutless in the 5th gen 4runner as well.

It isn't the lack of power that makes our 5th gens gutless, it is Toyota's new ECU programing for Fuel Economy and Emissions, which does everything in it's power to keep you out of its powerband at all costs. Even if we were to supercharge our engines, the ECU will still keep out of it's powerband, and not want to downshift unless you floor it.

If you visit the FJ Cruiser forums, those who had 2007-2009's, then moved on to 2010+s, complain about the 2010+'s lack of power. Really the only notable change from the 1st gen to the 2nd gen is the engine, going from Single VVTI to Dual VVTI, which offers an increase in power.

2007-2009 FJ
236 hp and 266 lb·ft

2010+ FJ
254 hp and 270 lb·ft

So in the FJ's case, the increase in power has made it feel slower.... More power isn't what the 5th Gen needs, it needs better shift points.

Lol! And if you like it... You can regear to 4.56 and get there even easier!

Why can't we like our own posts? Think of all the self-esteem we could build! I'll just have to be satisfied with hugging myself.

Wow, I guess I must be the only one, but I love the 4.6 in the Tundra. I think it's a great combination of power and efficiency. I would have loved to have seen it in the 4Runner, but like you guys say, it's probably due to way that it is tuned. It only has approximately 30 more horses and pounds of torque than the 4Runner 4.0, but the feel between the two seems more significant than the comparison between the 4.6 and the 5.7 Tundra. At least to me anyways.

Oddly enough, I have also been averaging better mileage in my 4.6 than the 4Runner as well, although the ratings don't indicate that I should. This is probably just a reflection of my wife and I getting on the gas more in the 4Runner.

That being said, the 4Runner has enough power for me and I'm in love with this vehicle. My wife and I fight over who gets to drive it! haha
