Performance Problem

Hello fellow Toyota friends,

I just recently purchased a 1993 V6 automatic 4 runner. The truck is in decent shape. The engine was recently rebuilt and has about 30k miles on it. The transmission and body has 186K.

Since I've purchased the vehicle, I've had to fix a few things.

Replace original Air Intake with Cold Air Intake
Received a code 51 (Knock Sensor) error message and replaced the Knock Sensor
Major oil leak. I traced the problem to bad valve cover gaskets, Replaced.

After making these changes I still notice the truck is very slow to respond when pressing the gas pedal from a stop position. Is this normal for this year of 4 runner?

Engine Type: 3VZ-E

i just purchased all NGK parts for the major tune-up, so I'm hoping the response time will improve.

Anyways. I've noticed that the truck's RPM climes automatically and goes back down to the original position if the truck is going a steady speed for a long time (traveling from home to work on highway, etc...). I noticed this sometimes between 35~45MPH or 55~60MPH. Does any one know what may be causing this to happen? Vacuum leak, Electrical Problem?????

Example:

I'm driving along on the highway at a steady speed of 60MPH and the RPMs are around 2500 or 2700. Without pressing on the gas pedal the RPMs will jump to 3k or more then drop back down to either 2500 or 2700. This does not always happen, but is happening more frequently.

Any input will be much appreciated! If you need further information, please let me know.

Your engine is nicknamed 3.slo (vs 3.0) for a reason :bash: It sounds like you're on the right track with your corrective actions. Also keep in mind as engines break-in they gradually get more powerful. The difference between a 30mile engine and a 3000mile engine can be substantial. Point is it'll never be a powerhouse or 'snappy' but it will get better.


As for the transmission: It sounds like the torque converter is locking and unlocking, normal. It will do less of that as the engine gets a little more powerful.
