performance questions

I have been following the forum for a while, but never posted anything until now. I have a couple of questions, and maybe some of you can help me out. I have already browsed through most of the treads, but I need clarification.

1. For an Intake system or TRD filter, will it give me better mileage(performance too, but not my main concern) just at the beginning, and when the computer adjusts will I lose it, or will it maintain the gain MPG and performance? Does the TRD give any improved MPG?

2. I'm looking at the cornfed system, and does adding a lift by spacers change the performance of the behicle other than a little higher center of gravity and a bit stiffer ride? Does it lower the MPG average just with a two inch lift, and stock tires? I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should be concerned with if I lift my 05 sports edition.

You cannot get better performance or gas mileage by using any one single device. It may sound louder and make it seem like it has more power. It almost always takes a butt load of money. For instance: if one was to change the intake and the complete exhaust system (starting with headers) then you would feel a difference at the gas pedal. As for mileage, it is almost impossible to increase. It is not a simple carbureted system. Don

I've installed K&N Performance Intake in my V6 and got 1.5 l/100km (~2mpg) fuel economy after 2 weeks and 1500km (950miles).

some aftermarket air filters have known to clog up sensors and cause problems long term due to over oiling the air filter. therefore there are users that will say that it's best to just get the factory stuff because of it.

Others have sworn that the aftermarket stuff helped but it's pretty much buyer beware. Figure after the cost of all of the aftermarket stuff added to save a buck here and there will still get you in the "red" so go figure.

As for lifts, I don't think a few inch will make a different but you never know unless you really test it out on the wind tunnel machine. That said, I wouldn't worry about it.

MPG is all about driver habits.

Enjoy the ride and just smile Gas will always be expensive. Just be happy we're not in some other part of the world where it's even higher!

It's simple. Less drag in intake will get less power to push the air trough. The same thing is for the exhaust. It's all about resistance. Vehicle is full of resistance forces like air drag, intake and exhaust, transmission, wheels, etc. By lowering any of them you getting more power to Wheel/Road pair (sorry, a little bit physics such as mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, mechanics of fluids and gases, aerodynamics,...). You can't eliminate those forces, but you can lower them. If vehicle will go with the same speed as before, but with low drag, it will need lower force to maintain its movement. Lower force means lower resources to get this force => lower rpm and lower consumption.

I guess the problem I have with it is that I believe that is there is almost no resistance in the original intake setup. The engine is a huge vacuum pump. Placing a filter on a 3

I have the K&N FIPK Airfilter, and I can't say I notice a difference in mileage, but I didn't do any type of "before and after" analysis, so I can't really comment on this. It definitely has a nicer, deeper roar, and it does seem a bit peppier when you step on the gas.

I have the Daystar 2.5" lift. The truck handles EXACTLY the same as it did before the install. No change in mileage. A great lift, IMO. Definitely helps off road, but you keep the benefit of XREAS suspension. I love it!

Similarly on my 3rd gen, the K&N FIPK does give me a little more pep when I step on the gas. It actually improved my gas mileage about 1-2 mpg at first. Then I believe the computer reset and I still feel the pep but do not see the improved mileage anymore.

As far as spacers go, I have the 3" revtek lift and it did make the ride stiffer. It may also be that I changed my shocks to Bilsteins all around. You will have a higher center of gravity so I'm sure it will affect your gas mileage. I did the lift and went from 15" wheels to 16" and 31" tires to 32" tires. All together, I've probably lost 1-2 mpg but I love this truck and I love driving it.

If you do the FIPK, definitely change the muffler. I went with a magnaflow and it sounds throatier and I you definitely feel the pep when you get on the gas.

ksneubec, the reason why you didn't notice a difference with the K&N is because you FAILED to throw in a Tornado. Instant increase in HP with Improved gas mileage, Lickity Split!

The cyclonic affect of the "Tornado" acts like a centrifuge forcing the heavier air molecules to the outer edges of the intake tube thus permitting the lighter more efficient, negatively charged, air molecules to move unrestricted through the intake letting your vehicle breath easier....

How am I doing?.......

Since I installed the K&N FIBK about 2 months ago, I have not noticed any improvement in my gas mileage but that could be due to the exessive amount of lead footing I have been doing since making this mod. I really like the sound when I accelerate.

I wish I had done a before and after dyno run to see if actually I gained any HP since installing the K&N FIBK and the Borlas Exhaust. The truck seems more responsive and I suspect it has gained 10-20 HP total.
