Performance Upgrades

I was hoping to start a discussion on what type of Performance upgrades everyone has put into their 4th Generation Toyota 4Runner.

I currently have a 2006 V6 4Runner Sport 4WD. Just put on a 2.5" OW Lift w/ 275/R70/17s and XD Revolver wheels. Next month will go on the Shrockworks front bumper and winch and PIAA lights.

Is anyone out there using a aftermaket exhaust, Air Intake, or performance chips to up the game?

Really the only way to get good power out of the V6 is two ways

1) Forced Induction IE Supercharger/Turbo

2) Build Your motor.

I am planning on building mine as I near 200k. The 4.0 has some good potential. Throw in bigger cam, stiffer valve springs, balance, and your talking good power. Ive been told anywhere from 20-25% increase in hp.

Talk about a V8 killer :biggrin2:
 
AFE intake or the new air aid one, URD maf cal, long tube headers, DONE. if you want to get boosted I'd go the the URD supercharger unless your going my route for a turbo but it'll take a lot of fab work and down time.

NO...because they are pretty much worthless. At best MARGINAL improvement. All they do is make the company selling them richer and the people buying them poorer.

The only aftermarket improvements that really work is turbo or super charger.

The problem with doing that is if it gets anywhere near a 20% hp increase...it probably won't meet EPA emissions. If you're not worried about that..OK. Also full racing or even half racing cams...they idle like crap.

What size cam constitutes a "racing" cam? I ran a 223/224 112LSA in my old truck, an while a mild cam it really woke up my engine. Combined with a custom tune and full exhaust and 2800rpm converter she moved pretty good.

However if I drove it like a sane person it was near indistinguishable from a stock truck IMO.

The place im taking my engine to be built is in CA. So Every engine they build must pass emissions. Im not getting racing cams. That would be like a stage 3 or higher.

I'm sorry that is incorrect. If you buy an intake alone then there is some truth to that depending on how well designed the intake boxes are compared to the factory. Now if you combine say an intake of good quality, revise the exhaust system, and tune the vehicle to compensate for the volumetric efficiency then you will get a good bump in power but it won't compare if you get boost. And even then the same mods will net better improvements with boost.

i run stock everything even the air filter but pulling out the hydro carbon air filter helped a bit for me!
hydro carbon air filter is that great looking filter that is permanently on the vehicle just pull it out!

I know that you have a very hard time using computers...but could you please TRY to show me someplace on the internet where some actual independent testing has been done that show there has been significant improvements with these kind of mods. If there are the 20% improvements that have been claimed then this can easily be found...even by you.

If there were any significant improvements in performance then Toyota should fire all it's engineers because they are doing a lousy job.
 
I gained a 20-30hp increase from a 93 octane tune with EFI Live on my LQ4 6.0 for less than $150. Sadly those tuning options aren't available for Toyota engines unless you run stand alone management from what I've gathered.

The factory ie Toyota leaves a lot on the table from a performance standpoint to achieve better reliability and pass strict EPA standards. Granted things like CAI's and throttle body spacers are worth little more than a paper weight, but to say that anything short of forced induction is a waste is completely asinine and juvenile.

I've said it before and I will say it again Mike, leave the talking to the adults.
 
And also please inform me what a "racing" cam is? I didn't dyno my truck but it is a proven cam profile to make power and maintain street ability. Since you're so proficient in using the Internet as you claim I am sure you can find some data on that particular cam shaft.

Never said they made one for the 4runner...Not sure if they do. If they did then it probably won't meet emissions. I have installed full racing cams on a couple of muscle cars I owned from the 60's. Made a drastic improvement in performance. But vehicles have changed drastically since then.

You keep making the claims...but your lack of science or education shows you really don't know what you're talking about. I keep asking for you to show me. Let me know when you can comprehend what I said.
 
No you show me what a racing cam is? Is it racing because the box you picked up at vatozone said so? What was the cam profile on said "racing" cam shafts you put in "muscle cars"

That was 30 years ago...Before you were born. Sorry but I lost the paperwork on that.

I'm asking you to back up your BOGUS claims that happened very recently. And HOW old are you?? 13...14???

idle like crap? yo the next best thing to an orgasm is the sound of a built racing engine idling. how the hell are you even going to comment on performance upgrades and not appriciate the true sound of raw power from a high profile lobe bump stick at idle. ("racing" cam shaft in your terminology)

Personally I haven't looked into what CS's are available for the 1GR & 2UZ's but the only thought that comes to mind is the 2UZ's are interference engines so not much lift to gain on the intake and if you held the valve open to long well the pistons going to give it a high five.

Forced induction will be the only "bolt on" performance upgrade that your going to get a signifigant power increase. however if a mild profile cam shaft is available i would certainly say you'll see a good deal of power increase from that aswell. throttle body spacers, CAI's, and cat back exhausts are going to be a waste of money. Unfortunatly there arn't many small buget options.
 
While I agree with a-ha, I recently bought a JET MAF sensor and a aFe throttle body spacer. Autoanything.com had a sale and a 20% off discount code so I thought I'd just snag them. I don't have any numbers, but I can definitely feel gained power and so far a ~1.5 mpg increase. Flame me if you want, but if I was full of s**t then I would just return them and get my money back. No reason to have them on my truck without any gains.

Anyway, have fun guys :hello:
