Is anyone else having this?

I am on my 2nd door lock actuator. First the passenger front failed. Now its the driver side front. The tension spring on the hood latch rusted away. Miscellaneous fasteners, including the one holding on the tailgate latch, rusted. I am not living in a high corrosion area. Even if I was, this is insane for a 2016 with fewer than 30k miles.


Did Toyota go 100% cheapo in the last few years?

I would say every manufacturer has. Part of the issue is the finishes and paints they are allowed to use due to growing environmental concern. Maybe that's the whole reason. Does not make much sense in regards to the locks tho (maybe it does?).

Been a min since I've been to Houston but it's pretty damn muggy there. Still tho no reason for stuff to give way like that.

Do you do a lot of opening and closing things? IDK just grasping ha.
 
I'd say my usage is normal. Around 10k miles per year. Nothing extreme. This particular 4Runner is a POS compared to my 2006. That thing was a brick shithouse.
 
Just to help keep things in perspective for you and hopefully make you feel a bit better...

My 2017 Ford F-150 Ecoboost 2.7 V6 that I unloaded to go back to Toyota needed a new $2000+ turbo at 8 months and 14,000 miles. By 21,000 miles and 14 months the engine sounded terrible, the idle was rough and the transfer case was making a very strange noise that Ford couldn't/wouldn't fix. After 18 months and 33,000 miles the clear coat on the hood started to fail.

Hope you get fixed up inexpensively and you have many years of trouble free driving after that.

Stinks to hear that. I had to replace all 4 lock actuators in my 2005, 4 years after buying it new. I found the motors online, and replaced them in each of the actuators. Not expensive, but a PITA to take apart all the doors and disassemble the actuators.

Was hoping I wouldn't have that issue with the 2018 I bought last year.

Houston though? Rust is not corrosion, it's oxidation, and occurs much more rapidly when water (or water vapor) is present.
 
I find it hard to find Houston humidity to blame, personally. Sure, things tend to rust more in the presence of moisture, but I live 1/2 a mile from galveston bay where things tend to corrode a lot more quickly than they do closer inland and I don't have rust issues on my 2000 4x4 T4R or my 1950 Chevrolet. I do however, find it almost hard to believe that "the tension spring on the hood latch rusted away". That's quite a bit of degradation in three short years, in my humble opinion. Anyone else in/around the greater Houston area have these problems? OP, do you have any pictures of the oxidation that you describe?
 
On my ford they started to fail kinda early. A fix at the time for those was to take apart and wrap the 'metal' plate with foil, held up for years. There was not a market yet for them and the oem ones were spendy. A couple years ago those finally failed and when I took one apart it was filthy and very old. Now the aftermarket is full of them and they are better than the oem ones were. They look to have been re-engineered with a different gear/motor layout and oem mounts. They hit snappier than the original ones ever did. They are items that are asked to do a lot in sometimes poor conditions. Good luck.

It happened and they replaced it under warranty. Part # 90506-18067.
 
No one is saying it's not a problem, so I dont think I understand your point.

It also isnt limited to 4runners, most toyotas have the same problem
 
All vehicles will eventually rust, and depending on the environment, some vehicle will rust faster than others, and thats what the above poster meant....extremely common problem.
 
Perspective. FCA products (07+) Jeep Wrangler has problems. Toyota fail rate is well below the Wrangler.
