I'm on vacation in South Africa and just took a drive in a family friends brand new LC Prado turbo diesel (3.0 4cyl), 5speed auto with sport mode and tipshift.
Vehicle is very well put together with a premium, refined, hewn from rock feel. The ride is very taught and it was bouncing to an frow on typically bad patchwork tar two lane roads in our area. I only discovered when I got back that it had the adjustable suspension with a sport, normal and comfort mode and it was in normal. The engine feels very gentle and a bit lethargic even when you really get on it, but the speed is somewhat deceiving as diesels can be because the speedo increases suffienctly rapidly, but is not accompanied by 2 gear downshifts and high revving that we are used to on petrol engines. It was very windy as well but held 120km/h (the typical highway speed limit) uphill without a problemand had power and a downshift to spare to overtake, going uphill and still accelarated. It only revs assertively to about 3500rpm however, after that there is no real benefit to revving higher and upshifting and riding the torque curve is more in its character. The engine is refined on the go and you wouldnt say its a diesel, but is quite agricultural at idle.
The engine puts out 120KW at 3400rpm, and 400NM at 1600rpm (approx 160HP and 290lbft). This wouldnt do in the States I think as the US market demands gutsy accelaration. 0-60mph is quoted as 11.7secs. Quoted fuel consumption combined is 13.7L /100KM, or 17.5mpg which is unimpressive for so a low power engine. The 4.0 V6 petrol has the same stats as the 2010 4Runner with approx 10% fuel consumption penalty.
hese stats are quite far behind the LR Disovery 4 3.0 DT 6cyl which exceeds these numbers by about 30%, so I think its time Toyota brought out a new V6 diesel or something.
The spec level on SA models is very high with all the gadgets incl front and rearview camera, Nav, adjustable suspension and terrain response all std from what I understand. I has the same finishes inside as the LC200 and I am not a fan of the low sheen wood, but overall I really like the vehicle and I am sure with some miles on it the engine will feel more punchy and flexible.
The price? R637,000 incl VAT - or $82,000!
Enjoy your 4Runners, they are an absolute bargain.
