might have to sit this one out until you explore a little closer. me personally, i dont think i can make the 7am trip and make it back home all in a day.

Interesting and exciting indeed!!!

Confirmation on 2 things real quick... please.

1) despite the terrain details mentioned, is it honestly safe to say a full-on/100% stock 5th gen could handle the roads on stock tires without being shredded on those supposedly sharp lava rocks? Or are there alternative paths one could take off to the side to avoid that terrain?

2) is this considered family friendly enough to take my 5yr old boy with me, or are there danger factors to consider as not suitable?

Kelbaker Road is a two lane paved highway, with a few petroglyphs off the 17 mile marker. Our "trailhead" at Aiken Mine Road is shortly after that. Up to the Lava Caves, Aiken Mine road should be no problem for your tires - it is mostly sand and rivets. After the lava tubes, the road does become one big cender fest... I traveled it with my old AT2's, had no puncture, but I wouldn't advise it - especially with a 5 year old. That being said, its your call... your 5 son will love the lava tubes.

Our walk to the Aiken Arch will be about a mile; might not be the best walking condition for a 5 year old in the Mojave, once again I wouldn't advise it for your son. Our drive to the Aiken Mill will require no walking...
