Great pics guys, but c'mon! Let's start a list going!

1. What do you shoot with? (camera, lenses, lighting, editing, etc etc)
2. What do you feel you are good at? (can either be on the photo or editing side)
3. What are areas you want to improve in?

I'll go

1.
Camera's: Nikon D3000 primarily. Also have a D70 and borrow a D5100 at times. Standard 18-55mm kit lens, Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 zoom lens, and Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8 prime lens.

Video: Canon HF100 with Canon shotgun mic, & GoPro HD Hero2 motorsport edition.

Editing: Adobe LightRoom 2 and Sony Vegas 9 for movies.

I don't feel I'm very good at much yet but am getting better at certain things. Really like night/long exposure photography.

3.
I'd like to improve in everything. Just want to get better all around. Still a newbie at most of this stuff and am just trying to learn as much as possible.

The flare just came from the lens and aperture. I shot this at F/8 10sec ISO 200. The lens was a Nikon 35mm F/1.8 lens. The more closed aperture is what gave it the star/sparkling effect I believe. I think I need to get some sort of filter though, you can see the glare/reflection from the LEDs in my headlights. Experts here help me out?


The slider is not motorized but I've considered trying to add one to it. I came across the idea here but was able to source the parts for cheaper on ebay straight from the manufacturer. I used 4 bearing pads on the slider plate and it moves fairly well.
The stuff is called 80/20. There ebay store is here Lots of cool stuff. Might try to make other stuff out of it later on.

Yeah, I was thinking BIG aperture number but wrote BIG as in the opening...duh, that was a rookie mistake I usually get some decent star patterns from the sun when shooting F10 & smaller. I almost always have a circ. polarizer on my lens though shooting outdoors, so that may make a difference. Here's a couple:

Some of the earlier pics I posted were shot with a Canon 30D and most of the outdoor shots with that camera were using a Tokina 11-16mm F2.8. Zooms or macros on the Canon were shot using a cheapy 70-300mm Quantaray zoom that had a macro setting I still have that camera, but now I shoot with a Nikon D5100. The all-around lens on the Nikon is a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8. For zooms on the Nikon I use a Nikkor 55-300mm VR.

I only shoot in RAW. My editing workflow starts by loading into Camera Raw to adjust and save to 16 bit TIF. These will either get loaded into Photomatix Pro (if I am doing an HDR), or directly into Photoshop and saved out of there for the final photo. If I am doing a timelapse, the step after Camera Raw will be into Lightroom instead of PS.

If you hadn't already noticed, I tend to shoot more landscapes & nature. I don't get to shoot much portraiture or candids, but that might be purely because I do a lot of hiking and wheeling vs. "city" activities.

One area I want to improve in is opening up a bit on subject matter. Going to public places and just shooting. Walking the streets, carnivals, etc.

I think next time I will definitely clean my windshield and maybe try and put a weighted bag on my camera to make it more stable.

1. Canon 6D, 24-105mm f/4.0L IS, 50mm f/1.8, Lightroom 4, Manfrotto Tripod (broke it tonight...), Blackrapid Strap (love this, so I had to mention it...)

2. Landscape, auto, product photog.

3. Portrait, currently learning night sky photog, flash photog, really could sharpen my skills in all areas though...


I finally got out tonight with a clear sky. I am loving the full frame more and more...

Canon 5DmkII set to Camera Raw, Neutral Picture Style. My choice lenses changes with availability, but generally I use a 24-70mm and a 70-200mm. Only addition I'd like to add is a 50mm, and a 17-35mm. Lighting? Always ambient. Editing? Adobe Photoshop CS5, however, I am restricted by DoD policy only to use "traditional darkroom techniques" within Photoshop. The only exception to this rule is Photo Illustratrions (HDR, etc.).

I feel I am pretty good at portraits, something about human emotion that just captures my attention.

However, I would definitely love to improve on story telling techniques. Being able to tell and elaborate story with just one photo is my goal.

Well, I don't have anything near as cool as you guys have to show. This is a picture of my dog from a week ago, was just trying out a few different settings on my camera. YES, I know it is out of focus, and YES, I know I have no idea what the hell I am doing lol.

I do have some better ones that would be much more post worthy on this thread, but I am fearful of thieves, so I won't post those until I meet with my department photographer to teach me some stuff, and watermarks some more professionally for me.

Now time to read through this, I have a feeling I need to take notes.

Don't know how you feel about photoshopping but I tried to eliminate the power lines the best I could(obviously if you see the original photo, you'll know where to look):

1. Shooting with Canon T3i with 18-55, and 55-250 EF lenses. Lightroom 4
for post. My previous camera was a Canon A1 that still works.

2. My main interest is landscape and architectural photography. I'll stop
short of saying I'm good at it...just respectable maybe.

3. I want to improve in all areas, but maybe also branch out into portraits.

Shot in 35mm with the Canon A1 several years ago.

Canon A1 again with a polarizer/red filter...I don't recall, this was circa 1986.

Definitely need a polarizer for outdoor stuff. Neutral density filters in different strengths is another thing that comes in handy. The polarizer I have (maybe others depending on how dark they are) can work for a ND filter also if it's not too bright of conditions.

The boat is a big V hull tour boat on Lake Powell. I couldn't see where the camera was actually pointed because I had my arm at full length over my head and just snapped the pic. I took that one with my 30D, which doesn't have a fancy foldable LCD monitor. After spying it on the LCD after the shot, I figured it may come out pretty cool.

Like this one. Kinda reminds me of a car commercial where they'd show the car going really fast (time lapse). I may have to try that myself.

I am looking at a used D600 plus 24-85 lens, extra battery pack and charger, small case for 1900. Is that a good deal?

Those are pretty different animals. One is a cropped sensor and the other is full frame. That alone should be enough for you to choose.

What's your goal with it? I would personally choose the d600, but I would not go for the 24-85. It's a pretty limiting lens when it comes to speed. A d600 with a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 would be a much better combo and you really wouldn't be losing much.

I bought the D600 with the 24 - 85 before Christmas when it was on sale, I sold off my D7000 and my DX lenses to pay for it. The 24 - 85 is a pretty good lens, but then again I like shooting wide. I just bought a 12 - 24 to go with it.

Whether to buy or wait has to do with what you are shooting now and what you are looking for in a new camera. If the D600 meets your needs then I would say go for it. Nikon just released a bunch of cameras and I wouldn't be surprised if they waited 12 - 18 months before releasing any more.
