if you’ve never been to Aruba.......go!

This has probably been mentioned earlier in the thread. I was going through pictures of some older Volvo 240s and other models, and stumbled upon this picture.

Any advice/instructional videos on how to get a shot like that? Aside from needing a different lens than my 18-55 kit lens, what should I be doing? A friend of mine is buying an Integra, which I expect to see on the track eventually, so I'd like to prepare haha. Thanks in advance!

You should be fine with your 18-55mm lens. What you want to do is shoot in either manual or shutter priority and shoot at a slower speed. At minimum I'd say something under 1/50th of a second. Then you'll need to practice tracking your subject and take the shot when the vehicle is in front of you. You can go out on the street and practice with passing cars. Start by pointing your camera towards a car when it's say at 10 o'clock to your left, follow the car with your camera, take the shot when the car is in front of you at 12 o'clock and continue to follow the car as it passes you by. Is that confusing?

It takes a bit of practice to get the timing down.

Oh and I forgot, but you'll also want to take your camera off auto-focus and set it to manual. Have the focus be set for the car to be in focus where you are shooting it along its path.

Makes sense, I'll try it out hopefully this week. My friend will be learning to drive stick(he just bought an Integra that I had to test drive for him:D) so I could get him going back and forth through the parking lot. Thanks so much for the help!

After much research and deliberation, I ordered the Pentax k-30 with the 18-55AL-WR kit lens. It comes with some other stuff as well, a bag, extra battery, HDSD card. The weatherproofing of this camera will be nice, especially when getting snaps of my dog playing in the snow!

I'm pumped!

I don't have a lot of experience with those shots, but can't you use continuous autofocus?

Good choice. That was my first DSLR and the kit lens is actually surprisingly good.

leftyguns21 your last photo is pretty awesome! How would I do that, where everything is in focus and you happened to catch the falling star, is it more or less timing?
Intruder I did not realize we are Camera bro's! Love my D600, though I find the autofocus on it is a bit slow. I've sent it in to Nikon and they "adjusted" the focus, though it's still the same. I read today that Nikon is replacing some of D600's with a D610 Nikon is replacing some D600 cameras with new D610 models | Nikon Rumors

Lastly, some pics :)

Which lenses are you finding the AF slow on? I mainly shoot the Nikkor 24 f1.4 and 50 f1.4 primes so those are lightning fast, but even the 70-200 f4 I just picked up seems pretty quick. Have you tried playing around with the number of AF points as well?

I heard the rumour about the D610 replacement, but I thought it was only if there was something majorly wrong with the D600 that warranted a full replacement. I'm happy with my D600 and haven't experienced the "oil spot" issue though.

Love the second pic. Third one doesn't show up because it says it's protected content though.

its def timing to get the falling star, got lucky to have my camera pointing at the sky in the right direction at the right time.
to compose the shot though...i use M focus, i set it to infinity (the sideways 8 symbol) and then dial it back a hair. since theres no DOF needed it does a good job of keeping everything in focus. a sturdy tripod, 15sec exposure at f/2.8 16mm ISO 100. if your lens doesnt go this wide you will either have to adjust the ISO or exposure time.

my Broncos got pumled and embarassed in the superbowl...but unlike Seahawk fans who would have jumped off the bandwagon if the situation was reversed..i stay loyal.

for next season....Go Broncos

shot with the 50mm f/1.4 @ f/3.5 ISO 100 for 1"

My everything lens is 24-70 f2.8...
Also have one prime 50 mm lens.
Fixed last photo.. thank you and thank you for the props.

I have not seen or heard of the "8" symbol. Will have to look at the manual.
Thanks for the tip!

I find it challenging to remember when to use which focus options.

Been listening to Improve Photography pod cast, pretty good stuff.

all lens are different but you should have this on it. never set it to the actual symbol but the line in a little bit. the only time this really matters is in manual focus mode doing night shots. rest of time you should be in auto focus using your focus points
