PIA starter

I just replaced my starter. The contacts must have been shot. Click, click, click, start...

Removing the starter from the engine was easy, getting it out was the fun part. I have no service manual, usually starters are strait forward.

I don't know if I did it the hard way, but I ended up taking the pass. tire off, splash guard, disconnecting and removing top half of tranny fill tube and moving a brake line. This seemed like the only opening big enough to get that puppy out of there. And at that, you have to twist and turn it just right while your sticking out your tongue. Ended up taking me 2 hrs. Probably could do it in half that now that I've done it once.

Anyway, she starts great now! I know I could have just probably replaced contacts but after that ordeal, I'm glad I went w/ a lifetime reman. $102 from Advanced.

I feel your pain. It took me well over 3 hours to get the dang thing out. Had to separate it from the solenoid, then once it was in two smaller pieces I removed the old one that way. Then it took another 2 hours to figure out how to squeeze the new one in because i wasnt about to try and re-assemble it inside there. Dylan came over to help me and we eventually squeezed it in the same spot you are talking about, moving the brake line and the hard transmission fluid line out of the way. It was a royal PIA!!!

Should have replaced the contacts, cost me exactly $10.50 and a trip to town 2-3 weeks ago, as far as getting it in and out, I actually was able to fit it in and out from the bottom, still tight, but it was a touch more room than when I took everything off at the pass wheel well, I couldn't get it to fit there for the life of me. Either way, sucks it crapped out on me in my driveway as apposed to my shop where all my good tools are..lol figures...

Starter contacts went bad on my GF's 2002 4runner yesterday. I pounded on the starter a few times and got it started enough to get it back to her house. Then I drove all over town to get the starter contacts and had to borrow some tools because mine are all at work.

Spent an hour on it and gave up. If I had my tools and not a harbor freight ratchet set and a crecent wrench I could have done it.

liar! don't you dare knock the supreme quality that is harbor freight, lol
it's funny we use their tools as throw away stuff, when we go on to job sites we buy a load of their tools becuase we know they are all going to get broken or stolen anyways, and i always wonder why it's such a pita to work on site then i get home to my craftsman and snap-on stuff and am much happier, it's amazing how having the right tools and good quality tools can cut a job time in half, lolarty:

Yeah I use HF stuff a lot for throw away but it seems like my cars always break when I am nowhere near my good tools.

my starter is making a screeching noise at start up. Some of you mentioned contact points. Are they available at Advanced??
In the past with other vehicles the screeching just meant the starter was needing replaced.
Will the contacts remedy my problem??

are you sure it's coming from the starter? and not one of your belts?
and if it's screeching, you need to replace the whole thing as contacts aren't going to help that, if it is indeed coming from the starter it would have to be the bearings in there and not the contacts.

i would try tightening up your belts first

Yes I'm sure of the belts, when they get some moisture from rain or dew they do the belt scream.
The starter makes the screech sound after the truck has been running and the engine is hot. When it has sat overnight 9 out 10 times it will start without the screech.

huh, could still be the baring but sounds more like it's catching once the engine has already been started and running correct? like the same sound it make when you turn the key to start it when the engine is already running right?

huh that's weird, to be honest i don't know what that could be i'll let others chime in on what it is and how to fix it, but i'm betting it's going to be replace the starter sort of thing, as it's either the bearing or some other mechanical component inside the starter or some random electrical short/frayed wire/ connection problem but i see that being less likely, i hope you can tell i don't know and am just guessing at this point, lol
