Pic Request: Aftermarket Rear Bumper Mounting

So, here's the deal, I'm finally trying to get the ball rolling on my rear bumper build, but I'm completely drawing a blank on how to start off with the mounts, aand am having trouble finding anything on how others have their mounts built and how people are bolting them up to their frames.

So I'm asking for some help from the community, could anyone with an aftermarket or custom built rear bumper take some time to post a couple pics of the mounts on the frame?

If I had any fab skills and/or welding abilities I would build it off of a trailer hitch, and I would use those mounting points.

I think I remember reading somewhere that that's how 4xI does theirs.

Most after market bumpers I have seen mount where a trailer hitch would. I don't see how else you'd attach one safely or make it very strong.

build an L that mounts to the bumper and slides over the rear frame rails then drill holes and mount in place if your going that route, but I would just weld it on. I can take pics of mine later (trucks at home).

Here is another view, all from the [MENTION=17736]AddictedOffroad[/MENTION] website. I know your building your own but I highly recommend this bumper to anyone in the market. They have a great product that looks clean and functions. The mounts allow for a clean/tight fit that contours the 4runner nicely.

The biggest problem with the aftermarket bumpers for the 3rd gen is the cost. I am planning to buy 4x4 labs rear bumper "kit" (for theLC 80 series) and adapt it to work with m 3rd gen. If all goes well, i should have a rear bumper complete for about $500...

Look at [MENTION=55891]Bandit Runner[/MENTION] 's link above, it's a kit as well but already designed to fit the 3rd Gen. Seems like a better solution than adapting a kit for another vehicle to fit. Plus you're supporting a member that way!

Thanks. Just to be clear, its not really a kit. I don't sell any parts, just the design. However, I do provide you with all the information to cut out the parts yourself, or have a shop do it for you. And of course I provide all the necessary instructions on how to build the bumper.

Thanks for that picture, that's exactly how I was thinking I would have to do it. And sorry bandit, I'm designing around a swingout and a body lift, so I don't think your design is going to do me much good, definitely would consider it otherwise though!

I hear ya, and the bandit runner bumpers are VEEERRRY sweet looking. probably the cleanest design of them all. but the 4x4 labs kit comes with all the steel pretty much pre-cut. and the 80 series landcruiser is a tad larger that the t4R but similar in many ways. I have never had good luck (at least locally)finding a metal fab shop interested in doing small jobs for me, so I think this is the best option for me since i don't have a plasma cutter.

Im in the same boat as you and it wasnt until I started making a "template" I said...fu@k this is going to be harder than I thought. Contour of the body lines, mounting points and piecing it all together is going to be a little bit of a pain. I have a 4th gen but can get ideas, thanks for the thread

i'm playing around with some ideas for reinforcing the wings. I just wanted to get it mounted for winter since i didn't have a rear bumper. My hooks are still mounted to the frame where the hitch mounts.

Ours is $599. What is your time worth? You going to have to modify that bumper a lot on the "what if" it fits.

I really liked their products as well. But I wanted to change a few things. It's similar. High clearance and designed for a swingout to be added. Makes for a nice table with the tailgate open.

They use the 4 trailer hitch holes in the bottom, and 2 bolts that I drilled through the frame up top.
