Pick One! 1st gens, which one?!

Hey guys,

Been a lurker for years going back and forth trying to decide if I want a 1st gen 4runner as a fun weekend vehicle. So I found 3 that are somewhat local. I put together a rundown of each so figure I would ask you and see what your choice is!

Now, I want a reliable dd if I needed it, has to be safe (2yr old in the back), no wheeling, just popping the top for some fun drives. My price, as you can see, is low. Like $1k low. I would rather do maintenance down the road than a bigger up front cost.

1. 1988 Toyota 4Runner - $1200 (very close, within 20min.)
- Auto, v6, inspected (bought for his kid and fixed it up)
- Lifted
- 33 inch tires (new)
- New exhaust
- Marlin crawler front bumper
- Sliders
- 4xinovations rear bumper
- Extra front diff with a lock right locker
- 4.56 gears
Has dents
It was a trail truck that has been made into a dd
- Does need a u joint
- body looks pretty banged up, but doesnt look really rusty. I am looking at this one Monday night.

2. 1986 Toyota 4runner- $1200 (about an hr. 15min from me, same state so easier transfer and tags) SOLD - Out of the running
Automatic, 22re
318K miles. Still runs good and starts every time. 4 wheel drive works.
- brand new tires (31 x 10.5 bfg mud terrains)
- new battery
grey interior (interior is rough, but rear is rhinolined in the rear)
rear window regulator is broke, but has new one just needs installed
- body doesnt look terrible, he claims a little rust but it doesnt stand out in the pics. I have seen WAY worse!

3. 1989 4Runner - $1100 (a solid 2hrs from me, different state)
Manual, 22re
- 260,xxx miles
- Manual
Literally a booklet of parts changed out including but not limited to:
- Timing Chain
- Alternator
- Starter
- Radiator
- Front windshield
- Waterpump
- ETC. (another 60 things and normal maintenance)

Cons:
- burns oil but does not drip/leak (quart every couple weeks but that was driving 40-80 miles/day - he said maybe a gasket)
- no cat, straight pipe so check engine light is on w/no O2 sensor
- Small body rust around wheel wells but NO RUST ON FRAME
- Back window button does not work but motor and window for back hatch are fine and work
- No AC
- No Radio
- Tires need to be replaced soon

As you can see, its 3 unique vehicles. #1 the body is rough but I get to see it in 2 days so I can judge better. Interior looks decent from bad pics but its an auto and the 6 however, he has lots of parts on it I could sell as well (bumper, diff and sliders.) #2 is auto but the 22re, body doesnt look horrible from bad pics but he said interior is bad but to me thats a fun fix and cheaper. And #3 has the best engine/trans combo, but there is rust, but not high up and doesnt look super bad. Tires soon and the oil leak could be a problem. Leather seats though with some rips and a crack in the dash.

Go!

The 2 autos would be show stoppers for me so that leaves #3.

I would first narrow down by which drive train you want then find one with the least or no rust. Small things can be fixed here and there but the rust is what you need to watch out for.

Do not want the 3.0. Definitely don't want an automatic. That leaves what's behind door #3. 22RE /5-spd. is the deciding factor for me. :thumb:

Sooooo no automatic huh?! Haha I get the point. I will try and put up photos tomorrow when I get a chance.
I will at least look at the one close to me tomorrow just to see it, give me an idea on what may be better/not better on the 5 speed one. Figures the 5 speed is the furthest away Ha.

Thanks guys

Since you alao live in the Mid-Atlantic region, there's no such thing as no rust

The frame rusts from inside out, so you any see it until its bad !
Take a small hammer or something and go over the frame with it, especially anywhere the frame turns upward from horizontal, above the rear axle, and beside the fuel tank.
Bottom and sides of left and right frame rails.
Also body mounts.
Both of my 4runners were originally PA vehicles, and I picked them cause the frames were solid.

I would say # 2. The auto is a problem but the 5spd swap is easy and the eng. is right so I would do 2or3. But stay away from rust.

Well again, I am only spending like $1k so is a swap really cost effective at that point? I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but that's a ton of work

That is not "small rust" on number three, that thing is ate up. You only see a tiny bit because the rest is hiding behind the chrome strip on the wheel well. I'd rather swap a five speed on a clean body than repair that mess.

With a $1000 budget, you're not going to get an ideal truck. Everything you look at in that range is going to have problems. You need to up your budget or decide what shortcomings you can live with.

Yeah I mean I certainly don't think with this budget I am going to get the perfect 4runner. I am just trying to decide which one, or none, is the best route. So you think #2 because the body looks better? But its hard to tell from his pics. I am trying to get more pics from him before I make an hour plus drive to see it.

Those are crappy pics for sure. No harm in asking him to provide better ones before you drive out there.

It's a tough call. The automatics in these trucks are horrible, but they aren't completely worthless, they'll still get you around. Same with the 3.0 - that motor still regularly goes 200,000+ miles, and it makes better HP than the 4cyl. Based on the CL ads, and assuming I wasn't planning on any major investment in any of them, I'd go with #2. If I was looking for a forever truck that I didn't mind putting money and effort into, I'd go look at all three of them and then make my choice. But if I was going to do that, I'd save up for a couple months to raise my budget ceiling and look at some better trucks too.
