Picked up a 06 4Runner Limited V8

Hey everyone... I've been a lurker for a little bit and just recently joined the forum. Great place here with a wealth of info. Can't ask for anything better than an active forum. I'm also a member of other forums (Subaru Outback and BMW M3) and they also have great people and a wealth of knowledgeable people.

I've been looking for a little while and love the styling of the 4th gen T4Rs. My wife and I have been looking at the Limited versions as we like the little creature comforts of leather, etc. This past weekend I went to go look at a 2006 Limited V6 with 39k miles (Silver color) that a Toyota dealership had just received days prior. I spoke with the dealership on Thursday and Friday and committed to drive 1hr to look at the truck on Saturday morning at 9am (when the dealer opened) and if everything checked out, I would most likely buy it. Got there at 9:07am and another couple had got there around 8:30 or so and were test driving the 4Runner. They finished test driving and I took it out right after them. When we returned to the lot, they had already begun the paper work to buy the truck. Just missed out and I'm glad I did because I would have bought it. There were some small tears in the leather the dealer was going to fix but other than that it was in good condition.

So Monday comes around and I find another 4Runner listing that had just popped up as I did not see it over the weekend.. Contacted the party and just came back from buying it :-). It is a 2006 Limited V8 in Shadow Mica with only 31,000 miles. I got a great deal on it and couldn't be happier

We are in the Washington D.C. area but we are moving to Minneapolis in June and will be using it to tow a trailer.

I had an 06 V8 SR5 and it was awesome year round. Hated to get rid of it but the Prius made (and still makes) more sen$e for a 30k miles/year commuter.

Was very pleased to pick up another 4th gen just recently, an 05 V6 Sport. Such great trucks in any configuration. Enjoy! :boink:

That is good to hear! Oh and congrats to you for getting back into another 4Runner.

We have a 2006 Subaru Outback with 45k miles which we will be sellling. We weren't sure if that would be the better car for the Minnesota winters but its only a 4 banger so its not cut out to tow our stuff there. It will just have to go for now
 
You won't be disappointed. I just picked up a 2006 Sport 4wd with the V8 back in January. Used it recently to tow a 21 ft travel trailer and had to kick the cruise off in the hills because of the curves.
I didn't feel too comfortable swinging 5000 lbs of trailer around at 65 MPH, although there was no sense of control loss. The 4Runner had no problem maintaining its speed. Plenty of power, smooth power.

That is good to hear. I'll have to pull a trailer to Minneapolis from Maryland so I'm a little nervous about it but your post makes me feel a bit more comfortable. Never driven that far with a trailer. It will most likely be a 4x8 or 5x10 trailer from uHaul
 
Utility trailer should be no sweat. I have two but haven't towed either with the 4Runner. I will be pulling a 4 by 8 with it around the end of the month.
My biggest complaint, and it's not the vehicle's fault, was that a previous owner replaced the tires with a smaller, lower profile passenger car tire that had paper thin sidewalls. A small stick at the correct angle resulted in a ruined tire.
New light truck tires will be procured before the next trip.
On the last trip with the travel trailer attached, I got about 10 MPG - to be expected when pulling a 2 1/2 ton load. On the return trip without the TT, I got a little over 19 Mpg with a loaded vehicle (no trailer) - not bad at all for a V8.
 
Pulling a trailer can be an eye opener. I'm here in MD and pull a old CJ7 on a trailer with a Armada. Both trailer axles have electric brakes.

Not sure what the UHaul will have most likely surge brakes. As our V8s are AWD I would check the maint records and see if or when the f&r axle gear oil has been changed. Actually just check the whole driveline fluids.

Weight distribution of the trailer and your speed will help determine if it will fishtail when going down hills. UHaul will have directions.

I suggest going I70/I68 to Morgantown WVA then I79 to I70. You can then get back on I79 to get to the Ohio Turnpike (north) or stay on I70 towards columbus. Don't take the PA turnpike near Hancock MD. When towing flat is better even if it's a longer trip.

Great advice! Thank you for that. I'll look into that route. If I can stay on majority of flat surfaces that would be ideal. I've driven to Michigan a few times from here and I can't remember the route, but there were some pretty big hills along the way through the mountains.

The TR4 has been maintained at the dealer and I have the service records. I don't believe I saw gear oil as one of the things done. Brakes were recently done. Since I only have 31k miles, do you recommend I go ahead and do the gear oil anyway? The mileage is low but I understand the age aspect as well.

From a current Minnesotan (Anoka area) to a future one, the 4runner does well in the snow. Just don't go wheeling in the yard when there is more than 2 feet of snow. My 4R had to spend the night outside and the neighbor pulled me out with his tractor the next day.

Slightly embarrassing.

First order of business for you should be to get the bottom undercoated. The winters here will F* your underbelly up....Bad...

I'll be in Minneapolis for only 1 year. Then not sure where I'll end up. My wife is doing her fellowship at U of MN. Do you still recommend getting the under body coated for a 1 year stint? How much does something like that cost in Minnesota?
 
I68 cumberland/laVale/Frostburg is a lot less hilly than the PA Turnpike with their infamous S Curves.

As for changing the fluids even with low miles.. The fluids are like the blood of a rig. Towing places a lot of stress on parts. Fluids are cheap compared to the parts they are protecting. Read the manual, there is a section for towing. For my Armada even with the tow package I don't tow in OD per the manual.

I agree. Fluids are cheap enough that I will get that done before our move. I will have to read through the manual for sure. I bought it this past Wed but haven't brought her home because I had to leave for vacation. I will pick her up on the 12th when I get back. I will get the fluids/oils changed and then probably do the timing belt once I get to Minneapolis.

Hopefully I have some spare time to get this done. Going to be super busy getting ready for the move.
 
Well I got back from vacation Sunday and went to pick up the 4Runner yesterday. Had a nice 2 hr drive back home and loving it. Here are some pics I took with the ol cell phone

Gorgeous truck! I have the same thin in an 08' and white.

Make sure 4LO works. If not it could be an electric actuator problem and a costly fix.

Also, listen for a tick on cold starts, this could be a sign of small cracks in your exhaust manifolds - also an expensive fix and very very limited aftermarket options.

I got lucky and got the 4LO actuator fixed uner warranty when I first bought it but I'm stuck with the manifold problem now for myself to fix when I find the time and money.

Nice M3. Is that a competition package or did you put the CSL replicas on?
