Hi folks, new 4runner owner here. I've been getting around in a 2002 wrangler with lift kit. It has been the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. Then came the birth of our beautiful daughter, and I suddenly needed to pick something up that was a little more family friendly, reliable, capable of handling offroad flyfishing trips, and about the same value as my wrangler(didn't want to be out any extra cash).
I've always lusted after 4runners of this generation, and was happy with the reliability reports. Found a Jade Micah SR5 from 1999 with only 80k on the odometer. The guy selling was friendly and straightforward, and the carfax showed that the car was brought in for service every 3-5k miles at a dealership.
The question is, where do I go from here? I'm not scared to tool on it myself. What should I tackle to make it reliable for the next 100k miles. The preliminary research I've done on this great site tells me I need a new timing belt/water pump soon, and should also replace the radiator to avoid the dreaded strawberry milkshake. Which should be tackled first?
Also, anyone know someone in the Atlanta area that can do the timing belt for a reasonable price? I think the dealer wants $800 for a new timing belt and water pump.
What are some good sites to order parts from? Thanks in advance. I will keep searching the site and researching. But wanted some advice up front to make sure I make the right choices.
