Pics from Trip to Eastern Sierras - from Nov 15&16th 2008

I finally got through all the pictures of my trip I took last weekend. I had a terrific time, until I had to come back home and find out all of LA is on fire...ugh! I took up some friends who hadn't been to the area before. We started out heading up to the Bristlecone Forest. There is a look out at about 9500ft before you get to the first grove. These are taken from that spot. This is a very great place to view the whole eastern range of the sierras!

From there we headed onto Schulman Grove. Found the roads open!!!! This late in November WOW!!! Found just a bit of snow! Of course out here we haven't had much, but at least it was white stuff!

Then it was onto Patriarch Grove. I didn't see any orange cones...all I saw was pine cones. :biggrin2: Apparently the Jeepers up top only saw the same thing. We weren't riding with them but some of them had some nice setups. There was one guy with them who had the older Tacoma. It was good to see they were playing nice with each other.

There was a girl up there who was house sitting for some friends who lived down in the valley. She had a 2wd Tacoma. We ran into her on the way down the mountain, she was walking up because of the snow. She didn't want to risk getting stuck.

On the way down we wanted to try coming out on Silver Canyon, which I hadn't done before. There was a very friendly person in another 4runner who had just come up. He was driving a very good looking 3rd gen!!! 4runner peeps are the best! He was kind enough to let me know even though the sign said the gate was locked, it wasn't Slippery down and needed low range but no problem for the 4runner.

We had stopped at the bottom near a stream, it was really pretty and as we were about to leave, the last jeeper stopped and said there was one more. The same girl with the 2wd Tacoma was coming down. I couldn't stop laughing. She was so awesome!!! She stopped on my passenger side with a sh*t eating grin....and says "HOLY SH*T" I about died laughing. I couldn't believe she came down that hill w/o Lo range! You could tell she had a blast. So for those people out there with their 2wd 4runners, if she can do it, so can you

The next day I had planned on stopping in the Alabama Hills and Mt Whitney. Again the roads were OPEN!!! This late in Nov!!! Woo Hoo!!! These were taken at Whitney Portal. My buddy pointed out some bear tracks, but they didn't photograph well.

Of course back into the Alabama Hills we headed! It is a great place with all of the weathered granite. So many westerns were filmed in this area. My buddy was climbing all over the rocks

Towards the end of the day we headed over towards the Tungsten Hills. I am assuming the mine we found was Tungsten, but honestly I have no idea. I took a few pics of this area. We also found a vampire lair. Haha!

Then it was time head back to LA I have more pics I shot in IR, of a bunch of stuff. I will post those later. That takes a lot more time to do the post-processing on each image.

I think a lot of the snow has melted since and most resorts are delaying their opening date.

I have a few Nikon D80s. The color stuff was shot with my Nikon D80 (post done by me). One of the cameras I have modded for IR work. I have one older D80, that was modded for full spectrum UV+Vis+IR, but I don't shoot with it much. I also still have my old F2, but haven't used film in many years.

These color shots were mostly taken as snapshots, so I didn't spend a lot of time on each image individually. The IR photos I haven't started on yet, as it takes time to get the post work the way I want it. There will be more snow. However, it was nice to head up there in mid Nov and find everything open. That was definitely a rarity.

What state were you in ? Your sig says your from Co. , but you talked about heading back to LA . Was this a local trail/camping trip for you ?

Where does it say I am from CO? I am from CA Maybe I am channeling some desire to head back there again! I love CO!!! These were all taken in CA. This is all part of areas on the 395 (The Eastern Sierras). Most people know the Sierras as having Yosemite, Sequoia and such but that is the Western side many people don't explore the Eastern side. Lots of people just stay on the main road (395) all the way to Mammoth. (ski/snowboarding destination for those who aren't from CA)

i would eat alot of mushrooms and smoke alot of chron in a place as beautiful as this. Those colorful conifers, oh wow!!

Thanks for the compliments. I am glad you liked them. Those areas are some of my favorites to visit...you can sit for hours and just enjoy the quiet.
