I think i will be happiest with demello too. And yea i agree with that statement.

I also will be checking out a local offroad fab shop to see what they can do and the price

As you probably know the 4th gen has two front ends so any bumper made needs to try to accommodate both versions. My demello bumper did not do a great job and my hood wouldn't close after I mounted it.

Basically, the cut out in the front of the bumper wasn't large enough for the grill to tuck behind...just barely.

I had to drive to work the next day so I just trimmed some plastic off of the bottom of my stock grill and it shut no problem.

Less than ideal but it works.

The way around it is to trim the top of the bumper so that the most inward part of the molding under the light tucks down behind the bumper.

Also, you are often seeing pictures of the trucks when they are not on a flat surface...the fram twist is huge on these trucks and you will notice a gap open on one side and shorten on the other.

You can make it work if you want to put the effort into it.

Here is a pic of the cbi: notice it is on perfectly straight but the gap increases as you approach the outside of the vehicle.

Yeah, there is definitely somewhat of a curve (or an angle) on the body at that point and it's just easier to not follow that curve while building a bumper.

Not that it makes a difference on how it fits against the body, but that's the previous version of the CBI bumper... the new one looks a lot cleaner at the lower mounting area.

With regard to fitment, and this applies to both my Demello front and CBI rear bumpers, they are not perfect alignment on the sides. But the uneven gaps are only noticeable when you look for 'em.

the gap bugs the crap out of me. the first thing i see is the bumper looking like its leaning back or think of a broken mount. Its honestly the first thing i notice.

Room for for flexing of body/frame is a must. Despite the gap on my rear bumper, I have a dent in my rear driver-side body panel from the bumper hitting the body during an extreme moment. Thus, the gap probably should be bigger, not smaller.
 
I like about 80% of the Demello, but it just exposes too much of the nuts and bolts and washer fluid resovior for a daily driver. A little too naked. My roomate has one on his Tacoma and it does look sick

Nah, I can change the clutch setting (recover or spool) by reaching through a hole in the bumper placed right near the control for most winches. (I did have to rotate the clutch cover so the control pointed down; took 5 minutes)

I actually control the winch operation by plugging the winch controller into a socket built into the top of the bumper; no mess, no fuss. I never have to open the hood.

The Shrockworks may extend out a bit farther (not sure that's accurate) but it is cut so high that I have not experienced any limitation as far as approach angle... time will tell.

The recovery points on the Shrockworks are well done. They pass right through the plate and are welded on both the front and back sides. The recovery points on my rear bumper are face welded only.

I think if I had it to do over, I would explore the feasibility of the Shrockworks in aluminum.... that heavy duty construction comes with a weight penalty.

After I installed the Demello, my wife asked me, "Are the 4Runner guts supposed to be showing?"

I plan to paint the exposed area of the fluid resovoir black to help make it less noticeable. Despite the exposed under pieces, I receive a lot of compliments. The clearance the Demello provides has served me well when rockcrawling.

Another 4th gen guy I off-road with has the ARB front bumper. Looks nice, but it is huge...makes the truck longer.

Yeah...one of my buddies has the Demello on his Taco and it looks nice. Here are our rigs together...

Has anyone actually mounted the Expedition One reservoir in a 4Runner? I did a quick search but couldn't seem to find anything relevant.
 
You guys that keep suggesting CBI as a bumper option to the OP... Stop it! I think he asked about Shrockworks and Demello. Nobody but me can have a CBI front bumper :). Hahaha, J/K, but if you read my build, you'll see that one of the reasons that this one appealed to me is because very few people have it. Only noobshooter and blk-4runner have the new style as far as I know, and none of ours are the same.

But honestly, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anybody. Outstanding product, service, support, price, lead time, etc. Those of you that have read my build, know how I feel about it and why I bought CBI, so I don't need to go into it.

I'd love to see pics or a write up if it's available somewhere. I saw where Jason made a reference to it over on the 120 forum, but couldnt find any info regarding a 4runner specific installation. Perhaps it's just that simple and straight forward that it doesn't require a write-up of any sort?

I have a Demello front bumper on the way and I think the very next thing I do will be figuring out a solution for the exposed fluid reservoir.

The wait sucks as does the weight.
However i really like it.
I would love it if someone made an aluminum Shrockworks 'looking' front with out winch mount, with 2" reciever. (for portable winch mount, front or rear)

Wish I had a link, think maybe I saw the same thing you did.

Give yourself some time to fit the demello in case there needs to be trimming...i did it on a Wednesday night and had to drive to work the next morning and so was kind of screwed.

Also, your AC lines will rub. I thought I had all of them out of the way but the one that angles over the winch plate was still rubbing. I caught it in time, bent it more, and put some padding under it. You can see the padding in the picture I posted on page one looking down into the bumper.

Appreciate the heads up on those fitment FYI's. Have multiple vehicles so setting aside time to do it right the first time is no big deal. If you manage to recall any other minor hurdles you ran into, I'm all ears. :yo:
