Anyone that has done a newer pioneer install.

Just installed my new head unit yesterday. A little miffed at the 3 different antenna connections combined with maestro kit not having the right adapters for pioneer/2018 4runner. The OEM leads consist of a: single black, single white and double white antenna leads. Currently I have the single white hooked up to pioneer's green gps plug. Waiting on my order of an fm antenna adapter and pretty sure I'll be connecting that to the double white lead. My question is which is the gps antenna lead and which is the satellite radio lead (white/black)?

Another thing: the Metra dash kit is horrible. It doesn't lock into place solidly. Still didn't mount flush after I pulled the mounting brackets of the OEM HU and bolted the pioneer HU directly to the OEM mounts. I ordered the Scoche version. Hopefully that will be better. I plan on having it paint matched before install.

For the OEM bracket I did have to grind off the 2 lower alignment nubs and I wasn't comfortable with just 2 screws on each bracket so I drilled matching holes for a 3rd screw on each side.

The maestro ST02 gps/antenna kit does not match up. It doesn't include a fm/am antenna adapter.

Besides that... pretty easy install. Waiting on Google to allow all android phones to have wireless android auto capability. Hopefully with the Pi update in another 1-2 months.

Wow that's a pricey head unit!

How's the integration working for you? Did you have bluetooth before? If so does it use the built in microphone?

I have an android unit it one of my other cars and it has fantastic integration, but it has a terrible radio receiver.
 
The only reason I got that unit is because New Egg offered a $395 promotional gift card with it. $800 was significantly less to swallow than $1200.

I'll post some video/pics once the FM antenna adapter and front mount camera arrive and I have to pull everything out again. Install is extremely easy in terms of pulling the OEM out and plopping the new unit in. All the extra wires make it a bit tight, but manageable.

Integration is flawless. The Maestro RR is definitely worth the $100 it is currently going for. The only wire cutting you have to do are the power and speaker wires.... about 12-15 wires. When you flash the RR unit you have the option to program the steering column controls. The default are correct, but I did change a few to have quick access to car monitoring info.

Flashing the Maestro RR unit you do have to use Internet Explorer, no other browser will work.

TPMS monitors (press and temp), door monitors, air intake temp, engine temp, fuel monitoring, engine load, 0-60 acceleration and braking, speed...etc.

The unit sounds great and Android Auto is 100X easier to use than entune. Toyota should just bite the bullet and integrate mid range pioneer units and save everyone the hassle.

It might be significantly more economic to go with a unit without NAV and rely solely on Android Auto. HERE mapping works well, but Google Maps or Waze are easier. HERE is must if you don't have cell signal. Onboard maps strictly GPS. At least that is how it was when Nokia owned it.
 
Finally found a you tube video with the info. Black antenna lead is the satellite radio antenna and the white is GPS antenna.

Headunit

I had this headunit in my 2015 Tacoma and sold it when I bought my new 4runner Pro. This is a awesome headunit. Worked great in my Tacoma. I sold it because I was not planning on changing my system out right away in my 4runner.
 
Scosche

I wouldn’d bother with a scosche kit. I bought both to compare. You can’t use the factory brackets to bolt the HU to the dash and the fit is worse than the metra kit.

I fixed the looseness of the metra kit by wrapping the spring clips twice with electrical tape. Still not a perfect/clean fit, but better.

I’m going to wait and see if the charcoal grey metra kit drops from it’s $80 price. Cheaper than having one painted, but still not worth the $50 price difference.

I mounted and ran the wire for the front camera today. The w8400 is not ready for prime time. It is missing camera settings in the menu. Most likely a firmware update will fix the issue. It is missing the parking guide adjust settings as well as the camera image reverse settings that are found in all the other avic/new units. I have contacted pioneer to see what the story is.

Overall I would say just about anyone could do this install, pretty easy.
 
I have this head unit on the way for install into my 2016 SR5.

Did you have to use the Pioneer GPS antenna? Or were you able to just use the lead?

You mentioned finding a youtube video, do you happen to have a link?

I just did this, but with the avic-w8500nex on a 2019 TRD Pro. I was able to use the car's existing antenna, but I needed an adapter because the plug didn't match the socket on the back of the stereo. I used the iDatalink ACC-SAT-TO2.

Were you able to fix these issues via a firmware update? Would you say it was worth the upgrade?
