Honest question, because I've heard "bad" reviews about the serpa's as well. Is it actually retention mechanism failure, or is it finger tip vs, flat finger on the retention mechanism during draw that's causing ND's?

I have a serpa for my 22/23 and I don't really see how anything but the operator's finger could pull the trigger, as everything else during a draw is going against the direction of a trigger pull.

Fair question.

They're a few issues: the first two of which apply to speed of draw, and malfunction of retention mechanism effectively eliminating any chance of unholstering the firearm. The most important safety issue, and this applies and has been seen across the community, skill is irrelevant in many of the cases, is that guys were drawing using their trigger finger, as you have to, and dragging it up holster, into trigger well and boom. Bullet in the leg.

You could argue more training, but I've been in the community longer than a minute and even when guys like Travis Haley, Kyle Lamb, and Pat McNamara banned the holster, as has most if not all NRA courses, that says something.

um ya the SEALs moved to the Glock 19 and alot carry .45 in a 1911 format like MARSOC.... do you even operate bruh?:sleepy:

It was announced they might change in December of last year, but AFAIK, the swap out has not happened yet. The 1911 might be fielded by some, but only as a personal preference and not by any mandate.

Right. The only noted "malfunction" of the Serpa is the potential for debris to lodge under the button while say, rolling around on the ground, effectively preventing UNholstering the weapon. There are no flaws or malfunctions around the holster itself actuating the trigger. Hundreds of law enforcement agencies and military units use, issue or permit the Serpa. I believe the USMC adopted it despite the controversy in 2011.

And yes, the only argument I have is training. The "finger curl" problem and potential for NDs results from improper training leading to NDs when finger is not kept flat on the draw and pressure in the trigger area continues after the pistol clears the holster. Proper training is required to minimize this risk in order to take advantage of the flexibility the platform otherwise offers the operator.

In my case, with a few thousand practice draws with my Serpa, which I only rarely use for open carry in TX, my finger remains nicely on the slide post-draw. I can only hope that would be the case in a gross motor movement situation, but I do have experience with at least artificial pressure and adrenaline in regular competition. In the case of the vault mounted unit I expect the same, but at least it appears any ND will likely result in a pistol caliber discharged into the 12 ga. steel vault... :usa2:

Thanks. Yes in your application of it I think it'll be a great platform. We actually run safari land tactical holsters all around and a mix of Osborne and Alien Gear Holsters for IWB low vis work.

Wait! OP, aren't you from Texas? If I were you, I'd instead be figuring out how I'm going to mount my truck gun. My handgun would be (and currently is) on my person at all times. It's a nice setup you have there and I'm not here to criticize your choice in firearm or holster. We could debate to no end which gun and holster is best.

I'm in Kalifornia so when it comes to this subject I know less than everyone here who lives in a free state. But recently, I was looking into taking a course at Front Sight and do recall reading something about SERPA holsters not being allowed.

Youbetcha. As I mentioned I have two on me--G19 or 17 typically AND a G42 in my pocket. This is just a truck gun because I can and because it was taking up space in the safe. I need to get rid of the old big dot sights on it though.

I had been looking at rifle mounts, but sunroof complicates. Will probably need something that takes over holes from passenger grab handles in back seat. Still thinking about that.

Nah, modern rounds for that thing include a booster. Not in my 4R. Maybe in the back of a Tacoma, but I don't want to singe the headliner. My last G was just recoiless--no booster propellant.
