Planetary Gear Whine

Well as some of you may know I been experiencing a supercharger like whine in 1st gear during acceleration. Had my mechanic drive my truck and he said it sounded like the planetary gear as the noise goes away once it shifts into 2nd gear. He said, at this point it wouldn't be worth it to spend 3000 for a new tranny since the tranny is still in good shape. Shifts fine, fluid looks good, etc. I'm at 168k miles right now. How much longer do you think I have with this transmission? Should I start saving for a new one now or do I have a while before it finally dies? I know the Tundra/Sequoia and 4runner share the same tranny in 01 and 02 which was a trouble maker. A lot of owners were experiencing this whining sound when in overdrive or higher gears. Mines only does it in 1st. Makes me wonder if my tranny problem is different from those eventual failures?

I'm almost 100% sure the Sequioa and Tundra have a different trans. So don't base your moves on researching those transmissions.

If it shifts fine and runs okay, leave it alone. The pinion bearing in my Yukon was singing for 100K miles, I sold it that way and the guy is still driving it with out any issues.

The transmissions in these 4Runners is awesome. I'd be really surprised if there is an issue. It might not be perfect but if it still works at 168K miles, don't f*ck with it.

Thanks, I feel much better now. But I could have sworn I read something on the forum that the 01-02 4runner shared the same 4 speed tranny as the Tundra. But you're probably right because those trannys suffered the whine in overdrive then they failed.
