Plasti dip fail

Tried to plasti dip the silver part of my running boards today. I used painters tape to mask off the boards and applied 4 coats with 30 min between each coat. Went on very evenly. I let the final coat dry for an hr then removed the painters tape. Well not just the painters tape I was quite careful but the plasti dip started to peel away too. I ended up peeling away all the freshly plast dip, but I didn't really have a choice, it was coming off no matter what. What the heck did I do wrong?

I've don't ALOT of plasti dip. From full vehicles to just trim pieces or wheels. You can't really use masking tape. When doing emblems you mask off a square around the emblems then once fully dry you peel what you don't want off.

[MENTION=131286]jharpphoto[/MENTION], -> You could have used an x-acto to cut between the parts you wanted and didn't want removed.
 
Clean the area with alcohol first. Peel the tape before the plastidip is fully dry and use an exact knife to cut around the tape as you're peeling it like Saker said. Take your time and it can come out good. My front bumper has been plastidipped for 8 months and 15k miles and it's help up great. Only 1 small chip in it from a rock on the interstate. I only plastidipped it to cover the peeling chrome though while I work on figuring out my plans for a real bumper.

I just finished my first PlastiDip job. Did the front and rear valences. The front one I let dry a little to long. Used a razor blade to cut the tape. The rear came out great. Put a couple of coats on and while it was still wet, took the tape off. Came out pretty clean.
 
That sounds like a long time to let it dry. You need to peel it while it is still wet. I only wait like 7-10 min between coats and about the same before I start peeling.

That being said, it is VERY hard to get a clean line using masking tape. Much better to let a natural break serve as your line.
 
I've been researching plastidip for a camo scheme I want to try. Almost all of the people say to peel the tape while the last cost is still wet.

A+ you did some research before you started :thumb: :biggrin1: OP this is by far biggest plastidip complaint.

you need to either (as stated above) pull the tape while the coats aren't fully cured or cut the newfly formed coats at the seams.. there is also a special tape sold (used for rhino) that has a cutting string built into it.
 
If you had simply bothered to inform yourself (Google search here, Utube, or Plastidip.com) before jumping in, you'd not have the problem. There is so much instruction available, there is simply no excuse for your problem.

BTW, JMO but P-D is probably not the best choice for a RB edge.
 
Yep, 7-10 minutes each coat, then peel away what you don't want after last 7-10 minutes. Key is it can't be 100% dry.
 
I used a tooth pick to trace the lines of what I didn't want to peel off and that helped out a ton. Clean it well, make sure the temperature is conducive and have patience while letting it dry between coats. The good thing is with PD, is you can get several chances and not really mess anything up. You might want to consider painting area that will get touched often to, like a roof rack and running board. Plasti-dip is made to peel off and sometimes it does when we don't want it to...sucks.
