plasti-dip interior

so I'm going to be doing my interior in black/red to match the outside of my truck. I got some chintzy black and red seat covers that only cost me $20 but they are cheese... anyways I took my interior dash trim out and hit it with 4-5 coats of red plasti-dip. I plan on doing the glove box cover in red also and taking the dash out and doing that in black. ultimately I will replace the carpet with black carpet and do the headliner in black as well.

let me know what you think. I know some people love plasti-dip and some people absolutely hate it. my motto is: i like it and I don't care what anyone else says.

best part is: its removable! and if I decide that I like the color I'll take it all out again and do it in vinyl dye.

Not my cup of tea, but I would have done red highlights on black base, that way it draws your focus rather than beating you over the head with red

Like you said, it's your truck, as long as you like it, and when you don't anymore, it's easily reverted.

I'll post pics when I put it all back together. it will probably clash horribly with the rest of my tan interior. but I have an end goal in mind. will continue to update as I get more of it done. will need to do door panels, dash, carpet, headliner, etc.

You are pretty young right? I remember reading a few of your posts about being new to mechanics, scared of junkyards and stuff like that right?

We are all young and do things we laugh about later. So whatever, personally, I hope you get over your fears of junkyards. Cause you will be in one real quick replacing any of those parts you **** up with teenage spray paint.

I just think you won't be happy, but shit do whatever you want. My whole family said gold wheels on my white 4runner would look awful, and I love them now that I did it anyways lol.

They sell carpet kit's on ebay, some with quality backing for around $200. Just be prepared like anyone else who dyes or paints interior, the wear area's, like seatbelts, kick panels, sill plates, arm rests, ect.. will wear through fairly quickly. Do your research and use quality materials to paint or dye so it turns out nice if you end up doing that.

I'm with the majority though, don't think it will look good at all. If you need a hand locating junkyard stuff, try this site; car-part.com it will cut down on a lot of leg work. There is also a few groups on facebook who are 4runner/toyota specific that are in our area (Olympia here, I see you're in Oregon).

Plasti-dip is the dry-erase marker of paint.

I don't get why people want to go through all the trouble (and money) of painting something... that isn't permanent?

And it looks like it would be annoying as hell to take all of it off if you're no longer happy with it.

It has nothing to do with old school, it has to do with quality & craftsmanship. The Plasti-Dip phenomenon has already passed so don't consider it new school. Just ask the guys here who used it in their teens who are now "haters" in their mid 20's. I'm not judging, you do what you want. I just try to add advice where I can. There is a grain in the plastic so have fun trying to get it off when you start hating all of that Red or try to get top dollar when you go to sell the truck. PD comes off much easier when you use it on a nice smooth painted surface. If this is an off road only beater that you'll drive into the ground then Dip away!

If you want a nice quality interior they sell primer & paint for plastics at any hardware or autopart store. If you're getting rid of all Oak interior colors for Black & Red only good luck! It's not going to be easy and a 3 color interior is going to look like crap.

I think it's because the end result looks extremely half assed. And generally people who do plasti dip their interiors choose obnoxious colors that don't match and make the interior honestly look cheap after they're done. Unless you're plasti dipping things like badges, grills, and wheels, you should either stay away from it or if you do want to change your interior that much as far as colors, take it to an upholstery shop and have them work their magic.

And it looks like you have a 96-98, I would convert the interior to a 99-02 while you have it apart. Just for the cup holders alone!
