Plasti-dipped interior trim. Bye bye wood

If you're anything like me, you hate the awful wood interior trim. I tried a 3M wrap on some parts but it just bubbled up in the sun, looked great though.

I thought what the hell, it's a 16 year old car and doesn't have to be perfect so I plasti dipped it. Still have the wood around the speedo left, but otherwise very pleased with the results. was real easy to take everything apart and spray. dried quick, put it all back together in the same day.

yea! matches the cupholder trim (black from factory) perfectly. I figure if it gets scratched up I can just take it off and repaint. my rims are dipped and have held up so far to dirt, scrubbing with the huge brushes at carwash. stuff seems to be pretty durable!

I like wood grain but there was just WAY TOO MUCH on the 4runners.
Wood grain should be an 'accent', not the main color of the part. That's what makes it look cheesy.
I plastidipped the gauge, radio, and shifter bezel, and left the door panel wood. Of course I reupholstered my door with black leather, so that makes it look different too...

I actually just moved down to San Diego, but I still have some friends up on the west side so I may be around. I really like the plasti dip on the wheels. for a old SUV it's just fine. for a nice car, a professional paint job looks much better. good luck on it, it's super easy. I removed each wheel and sprayed it on my driveway!

agreed. the black leather sounds pretty cool! I just have to do the gauge this weekend. anybody know where I can pick up the clear plastic that goes over the speedo/tach? and if it's even replaceable? mine is scratched to hell from the previous owner

I think it looks pretty good

For the clear plastic; try some turtle buff. Won't be perfect, but will help a lot

yes it is replaceable but I'm not sure where you can get this in a hurry - probably from the stealership or an online toyota factory parts house via mail

Just replace it. As far as I'm aware, all 3rd gens use the same piece. However, there seems to be two different part numbers. The part number for the older models is more expensive and apparently no different than the part number for later model 3rd gens.

I just picked up the one in these pics and it is for a later year model (1999-02). It will be going on my 97 soon though. It was $30~40 or so on eBay.

I should add that despite it saying "glass" on the box, all third gen lenses were made of plastic and your replacment will be plastic as was mine. Glass would have been cool but probably a safety issue in the event of a collision.

I'll be taking care not to dry rub the new lens when it gets dusty in the future.

I also don't mind wood grain interior. My 4runner is an SR5 model, but my mom wanted wood grain accents. This is dealer installed wood grain interior. It sticks on so whenever its time to get rid of it, I can just pull it off and have black under it.
