Plastic Key

Anyone else actually use the plastic key you get from Toyota as an emergency key? It's actually kind of useless as it won't start the engine. Just curious if it's actually worthwhile to get this key cut.

I once used it at the metro parking since I forgot the key at work. At least I can get in my truck and relax while waiting for my friend to get another key for me. It will be useful if it is cold outside.

BTW, Hi Joe. I'm also in Fairfax, VA.

Sorry, it was not a clear pix. Hope this one is

Nope never got that, did the dealer just hand it too you, or was it in the truck somewhere? Maybe I have one, but just never found it :D

I remember this plastic key was sent to me by Toyota Association(not from the dealer) a couple weeks after I got this rig. In this letter, it asked me to go to my dealer and had this cut to fit my 4runner.

when I bought the 4r I have now, they cut one, but now that you mention it...I don't remember getting home with it...hmm. maybe it's with all my paperwork. dunno. guess I'll go look.

That's the key to the plastic 4-Runner called Plastic Edition... All mine keys (3 of them) are normal (metall). Not sure WTH the one you got is for, see if you can sell it on E-Bay as some rare item:D

Never got one with my '03, and never saw one before. With the newer alarm systems, wouldn't this set them off because it doesn't have the ID chip?

It must be a mid-atlantic thing because I too got the plastic key. It's only really used for getting you inside the truck. When I took delivery of the 4Runner, I got the valet key and the two regular keys with alarm fobs. A week of owning I got the plastic key from Lustine in VA and I took it to the parts booth to get it cut for my truck for free. I just keep it in the wallet in case I ever lock myself out.

add college station, texas to that mid-atlantic group... ;): just found my plastic key in and among my financial documents from the dealer that day. I ended up filing the key away in the filing cabinet...

That plastic key would be real handy for my key pouch in my wetsuit while I'm surfing. Anyone in CA know if the dealers have this and can you get it for FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Thanks, Mark

spare key

I didn't get a plastic key, but I did have a spare key (no chip) made, $1.98.

I hide it on the 4R, I Then hid one of the 'original' keys inside.

This way if is lock my regular keys inside, I can get in. Also, if I LOOSE my keys, I can get in AND get home.

If a thief finds the hide-a-key, he can get in, but can't steal it.

Note: You need one of the original black keys to program new keys (from the dealer) so that is why I hid a black key inside the rig.
