I agree as well. I only replaced mine with the metal mainly because there was a deal on Amazon day last year. The only observation I had was that the metal one screwed in nice and smooth, the plastic one made a weird popping noise as I threaded it in.

Reading above, a touch of anti seize is probably a good call on the threads. Heat cycles and aluminum threads....

I put the Bjowett housing on mine. Has a Fumoto like quick drain. Makes oil changes a breeze. Unfortunately he has had issues with his manufacturer, so he has not had a new batch for a while.

I was going to put this on mine, but sadly got a bad one, leaked all the time. Got a full refund No questions asked refund (standup company) and just decided it wasn't worth the hassle to repurchase or reinstall.

Metal is used by Toyota in cars without skid plates such as Camry where it prevents road damage if something is to hit that housing. 4Runner has skid plate and therefore there is no need for reinforced oil filter housing and plastic one is used (it is not cheaper to buy, it's is just cheaper to produce meaning it makes more financial sense to Toyota). I replaced my with aluminum alloy for many reasons such as softer plastic always gets stuck in the filter cup wrench, plastic (any plastic) gets dry and brittle as it ages and many more I wouldn't bore you with technical reasons and specs. Keep stock plastic and all will be fine. Metal is just an upgrade and will yield little of benefit to most here.

This makes sense. A family member has a v6 Venza which is the same motor as 4runner and comes with aluminum filter housing.

False, the Venza has the 3.5. We have the 4.0

Yep, he had one bad batch during a group buy, which forced him to change to a different machine shop after the original could not meet his quality control requirements.

When they finally come back to the market, they will be better. Question is when that will happen. We have 3 vehicles with the bjowett caps, and they work perfectly. Hopefully Brian can find a new shop that has better QC...
