Plastidip 5th Gen Wheels?

I have seen that many people on the net have used this stuff on their wheels to get the black out look. It appears that this is completely reversible, since you can just peel this off if you do not like it.

Has anyone on here sprayed their 5th gen wheels yet? Very cheap at $6.00 a can, and you achieve the blackout look in just a few hours. I do not know how this stuff holds up over time. Can anyone enlighten me on this plastidip? I am thinking about trying this on my trail wheels, since the wife is restricting the budget.

I know a lot of other gen's plastidip their wheels for offroad use. I haven't plastidipped mine, but just sprayed flat black paint on them. They held up really good, only a few minor paint chips here and there. You just spray it on their and if you don't like it, it peels off.

What was that process like? Did you remove wheels from truck and pull tiers or just do a hell of a tape job? Would love black rims but the funds just dont allow me to go out anf buy brand new ones.

I had my SR5 rims on at the time, so I actually painted the whole rim black, inside and out. The best way to do it with tires on, is use index cards and stick them inbetween the wheel and tire, than tape it down.
 
i have plasti-dipped my rims on my g37s and all i did was take off the wheels and then i used index cards and stuck them between the rim and tire and then just sprayed them like that.

Nice car.......amazed at the quality of the plasti-dipped rims appearance, nice job.
 
I did mine last week. It was super simple and turned out pretty well so far (~400 miles, hellish hailstorm beating and no dings so far). I took off my wheels, cleaned them really well with denatured alcohol to include the edge of the tires (so the tape would stick), taped off valve stems and tires and went to it. I did not tape off the back side nor did I spray it. The backs of rims are dirty enough that without some serious cleaning no paint will stick anyway so it was a self-solving issue. It doesnt look bad at all without painting the back, I dont even notice and I'm pretty bad at letting that kind of stuff nag at me. The center caps "T"s pop off so leaving them chrome looks good and requires literally zero effort.
I went with Plastidip because it no-joke actually does come off really easily. If you dont like it then you are 2 hrs away from stock color wheels again. I painted mine in about 4hrs total fwiw. Pics to come later.
 
Do you guys have any tips for removing the masking tape without peeling off the plastidip? The few "trial runs" I've done on various things around the house, I've always had issues peeling the tape without peeling off the plastidip that's supposed to stay on.

I have not attempted this yet, but I have been reading other peoples procedures online. Most place either notecards or playing cards around the rim and tape down. After each coat, they take a toothpick and go around the cards and rim to make sure there is no contact of the plastidip. Hope this helps!

I am dying for someone on here to try this. I am in the middle of moving and won't get the chance for at least a month.
 
Granted it PROBABLY takes more abuse then wheels, but I plastidipped my belt buckle, it lasted less than 2wks.
 
Plastidip is awesome! i've applied it to all of my 4Rchrome even the roof rails although those may need another coat because i laid it on too thin when i did those. Since I've worked with this stuff Prepare the part like you would normally by masking whatever areas you don't want the product one however One big word of warning. When it comes time to remove the masking make sure there is NO contact with the plastidip or you will peel it off and basically its near impossible to retouch that area. I found about 1 day curing time to be good on this product and start to handle it with your hands. So far no chips or tears its a really good product. Not sure how it reacts to brakedust and if it will turn brown against the black.

Thanks for the tip, sounds like a good strategy.

It is damn near impossible to find this stuff locally. It is only sold at one store locally, Home Hardware, a chain like Home Depot but much much much worse. I went into one, and they only had the "dip" kind (not the spray on). I asked if they could see if another store had it, and they said that no they couldn't as Home Hardware doesn't have a system like that. I went to one other Home Hardware store, and they only had red. I'm going to try looking at a few other locations... once I find some, I'm gonna buy 3 cans I think.

I'm not really planning to use any on the 4Runner... I don't think a gray TE would look to good with black wheels... though I could be wrong. Planning to do a few parts on the STI though.
 
I am getting ready to do my SR5 wheels. I havent seen any SR5 wheels in black yet, I dont think, but there are plenty of posts on here of Mag Grey rigs with black wheels. I think it looks great, hence me wanting to do it. Just got to get the time to do it and when Im done I will definately post pics.

I just did mine 2 days ago! Bought a set of Limited 20's from a forum member (excellent transaction) and used the plasti-dip. Worked out real good. I will take pics tomorrow when it's nice and sunny outside.

Note that the first wheel has some tire shine that got on it. I was real easy to do. I sprayed 3 coats of the plasti-dip. I will peel it off and retry to do it again. My first coat was real heavy and when it dried it came out really nice. Smooth texture and it was actually shiny and not flat.

I really wanted to powder coat them gloss black, but didn't want to pull the trigger until I actually see how they would like like. $6.00 a can was a cheap way to help me decide whether I want to do it or not.
