Plastidip Blackout - Wheels / Rear Emblem / Grill

Decided it was time to play around with this plastidip stuff..one word..awesome!

The wheels and emblem came out great, I sprayed the wheels while they were on the truck, no masking. I did wipe down the tires with Tire Shine and cleaned the wheels with alcohol prior to dipping them. Sprayed about 6 coats on them and they look good! The overspray peeled right off.

The rear emblem could not have come out any better, precision lines and no issues whatsoever, the overspray peeled away perfect. Sprayed about 6-7 coats on the emblem and taped off about an inch around everything.

Bought the plastidip at Home Depot for about $6 a can and wrapped the cans in a heating pad to keep them warm before dipping. Very smooth finish and I used up about 2 cans. (Was about 45 degrees in the garage while dipping)

We'll see how it all holds up, now to just get rid of these dunflops and trade them out for some Duratracs!

I was blown away at how easy the dip pulled away from the letters after putting on several coats. The lines are razor sharp, like the emblem was removed and painted. (There is a great youtube video of a guy doing this exact thing to his Tundra, great walk through)

I lost my lighting in the garage but will take more closeups tomorrow with the truck outside in the light.

Only prepped the wheels by cleaning them with alcohol, I sprayed 6-7 light coats and kept the cans warm so the spray would come out even not chunky. If the cans get cold the spray can start to splatter. Also hold them upside down and spray for a second after each coat before you put the cans aside until the next coat. I waited about 30 mins between coats. Best advice is to check out www.dipyourcar.com for hints/videos.

I can't tell, did you take the wheels off for this, or just left them on and slid something underneath to protect the rotors? Also, does anyone have any insight on how well the plastidip will hold up to dealer tire rotations? Since they use the pneumatic gun, wouldn't that tear up the plastidip around and on the lugnuts?

I left the wheels on. If you look at the first pic of the wheels pre-dip you can see the taped off valve stem and the plastic behind the wheels covering the rotors and calipers. I just bout some cheap plastic painters drop cloth and threaded it through the wheel over the rotors.

Final thought, really like the look! We'll see how the dip holds up, I think I may hit the wheels up with a few more coats down the road inside the rim on the hard to reach areas.

I'll update the thread after a while to report how the wheels look after some wear.

Pretty sure he sold them after picking up the new ones. Was going for a cheap blackout until I burn up the rest of the dunlops and outfit it with Duratracs. (And eventually Konig Countersteer Type Xs) Love Antman's rig though!

Lemme tell ya- it ain't as easy to take off when it's cold outside. Needs to be like 90!
