plastidipping my wheels.... help.

To plastidip my wheels do i have to take the tire off? or does it matter? And how well shoulld i clean the wheels? and most importantly, i have an all black 4runner windows tinted and every emblem plasti dipped black already, should i black out the wheels or smoke them out?

any other tips would be appreciated:D thank you!!

That's what's cool don't like it peel it ! But ya clean em good , see what colors might look good smoke might work & if not peel it.
 
Take the wheel off of the car and put notecards in between the rim and the tire. Make sure that your wheels are clean then just spray away. When I did mine I did about five coats and it turned out pretty nice.

I literally just took the wheel off, cleaned it with windex and paper towels, and sprayed 4 coats.

i have the same brush guard too!

Should i do shadow or black plasti dip though and is that red paint or red plastidip on your toyota symbol?(where can you buy smoke plastidip?) Did you spray where the lugnuts go to or tape them off? What about the back of the wheel?

this is what it looked like a week ago... everythings blacked out now though.
can anyone photoshop?

No need to take the tire off, just tape off the front a bit so you get nice clean edges on your plasti-dip, makes it way easier to clean because you can just peel it off in pieces. or you can place business cards or something between the tire and the wheel.

You should try to spray from both sides of the wheels to make sure you get as much of the wheel as possible, wouldnt look very good if you could see exposed metal in the wheel.

clean as best you can with a wheel cleaner then just blast 4-5 coats on and you should be good to go.
 
I've done it with the cards in the tire trick- no more...

You do not need to take the extra time to cover the tire. Plastidip is neat stuff. Clean the wheel, make sure it's dry and spray away. When it's dry, use your hands to rub the overspray off the tires. It will break away clean from the wheel itself. Done it this way for the last 2 wheels I had to respray.

This does work. In fact, you don't even have to take the wheels off. Just tape off lug nuts, rotors & calipers & spray away. A little hard to hit all the angles, but it's an option if you can't take all wheels off at the same time. Sprayed my spare too.

I like the brush guard but I hate how much mine shakes. I had to build my own beefier mounts to get the damn thing solid like its supposed to be!

There is only black, white, red, and clear plasti dip I believe.

I used Testors Red hobby paint on the Toyota emblems. Thought it would be a nice little tie-in (and look pretty vicious :bat:)

I didn't spray the back of the wheel, I just made sure I had good lighting with my halogen shop lights and I sprayed until everything was covered! I began to try that index card thing, got about two cards in, said f#ck it, sprayed and have had no issues with the lug area or the tire with the overspray. In fact, that close-up picture of my wheel is with overspray... Did anyone notice it? I think not! haha

I'd love to see flat black on your truck! I would have offered to photoshop it, but I have so many gauge clusters piled up haha. I need a friggin payroll.... ugh.

On my other truck (2001 double tacoma) the brush guard doesnt move a bit though.... kinda weird, but the two mounts that go under the hood look weak. lol

and ok cool i think ill go all black except for the hub cap, or maybe paint that too, i cannot decide.

How many cans of plastidip do i need to have on hand so i dont run out?

that sounds like a BIG time saver instead of taking off the entire wheel....
did you just put the newspaper flat behind the wheel?
 
It did save a lot of time. I cleaned the wheels first with wheel cleaner. I wrapped the newspaper around the rotor and made sure I was covering that and the calipers.

I used about 4 cans for emblems and wheels. I'd get 6 do you can do your spare, emblems, everything!

IF you have extra time, I would highly suggest taking the wheel off. It's a lot easier to get good results this way!

What I did was start with the spare, get it all done, then put the spare on the left front and plasti dip that- so on and so forth haha. I just rotated them all around so I could just drive my truck while it was drying... Even if it looked stupid... :lol:

I got no overspray on my sister's car--there was no wind. But even if you do get overspray, it's Plasti Dip, so rubbing it with a clothe will remove it from your paint.
