Please help 4Runner sounds like a 4-wheeler [emoji23]

Just installed a Gibson elite black cat back exhaust on my 2007 V6 SR5. I was so excited but when I cranked it and drove it, it literally sounds like an ATV going down the road with that sort of higher pitch exhaust sound. Please tell me this is not how the Gibson’s are supposed to sound. I am thinking there may a leak at one of the joints or I’ve messed up my cat somehow… not sure as this is my first foray into exhaust work. Many thanks for any advice or tips.

If it was me I would just put my hand over the tailpipe (Cold) while a friend checks around the joints for leaks...easy enough to find and fix.

That said I don't really like the sound of this engine with a loud exhaust, I was thinking about it, so I looked at some YouTube vids, they sound good at low RPM but at higher RPM just sound like a 4 pot fart cannon.

Not meaning to rag on you OP but there might be nothing wrong and it just sounds that way!

If you don't have anyone to hand you could just block the tailpipe up with something, you won't hurt anything leaving it idling for a minute like that. You could use something like a rag so it's only a partial block. Don't forget to start with a cold exhaust, and be quick! (So get it positioned/up on ramps first etc if you need to)

This is what I would do anyway, big fan of the K.I.S.S. approach :biggrin1:

Edit: Unless you were hammering something I don't think you've broken your Cat.

There was one minor leak and I was able to fix that, but that wasn’t the problem…

Looks like all that jarring has cracked this pipe connected to what I believe it’s a cat.

Could I temporarily fix this with some kind of exhaust tape? Or what should I do?

Have a look for "exhaust repair sleeve" or "exhaust repair wrap", slide it over and seal with exhaust paste. That's just what I would try others might have better ideas.

No, don't bother with that temporary goop and wrap. Take it somewhere that does exhaust work or a welding shop and ask them to re-weld it. They will need to tack weld it, then most likely remove that section of the manifold and catalytic converters to completely weld it, then re-install. Fix it right!

I would guess the cat would get hot enough to heat up any exhaust wrap enough to blow a hole into it at some point. Yeah I would take it to a shop for a more permanent fix.

Yea that’s the end goal to get it fixed properly, just looking for something to temporarily hold it over. The sounds terrible and with the shops around here it will probably be a week or two before they can get me in.

Another possible option would be to check the salvage yards for a 4runner, Taco or FJ for the complete manifold and cat.

I hope getting that crack fixed is your solution, but for my V6, the Gibson simply sounded terrible at any speed other than idle. The drone at normal driving speeds was obnoxious after a few weeks too, so I got rid of mine.

Oh no… well, ive got a temporary patch on right now and it sounds decent at idle. We shall see what it really sounds like after the patch cures…

Put the JB weld exhaust patch on, and it lasted about three days. Got it welded back a few days later.
