please help, i stumped the mechanics with this one

how many miles on yours, i cnat see the pic up close enough, im actually thinking about geting a compact car insted they are offering me 6,000 for the 4runner but if i thing i can get another 60-90,000 out of it i would be estatic.

they have really big car seats, our mothers live out of town they fly in to see the grand kids every other month, so we could barely squeze my 110 wife between the car seats. we always had to take 2 cars to go to the beach, or out to eat.

update: toyota called and said they now think it is the fuel injector after i told the import garage on thursday, friday, and toyota mon, tues, and wendsday 365.00 more i need to pay but if this isnt it they will fix what ever is wrong for free, =parts, she put it in writing for me this time.
so tomorrow something else will go wrong
8 years, 135,000 miles not one hiccup till last week.

Get your money back from the earlier repair or don't pay them for the current injector work. Either way, you shouldn't pay twice. Pay for the repair that works.

I really think you have an injector going out. swap that #5 injector out to #1 and see if it follows

+1 for bad injector. I chased a very similar intermittent problem (misfire in cyl. x)...changed plugs/wires, swapped coils around, changed fuel filter, cleaned MAF...& problem kept coming back.

Finally took it to a buddy's import shop who specializes in Toyotas. He immediately diagnosed it as a bad injector in that cylinder. Went ahead & let him swap it out w/ a new one & its been running great every since.

If you take care of it, there is no reason why you wont get 300K + out of your 4runner. If you take 6K for yours, they will fix it, turn around and sell it for 2X that. Keep it

thye finally swaped the fuel injector in number 5 and so far it has worked better than it has in years, but im still nervous everytime i crank her up. i plan on driving her till the wheels fall off, it been with us through a marriage, college, and birth of our twins. 4 hurricanes (pensacola, fl, is a hurricane magnet). we have had her since late 1998.

Is the injector and ignitor considered to be the same thing.

I had these same symptoms and it took us quite a while to diagnose it was one of the ignitor coils.

Starting last November I had the same symptoms with my 01 4runner 130k (running rough at startup and the engine light coming on giving a random misfire code) and same issues with not solving the problems (replacing plugs, wires, swap out coils, fuel injector cleaner, etc) I gave up and took it to our mechanic who flushed the fuel system. After that the mechanic was able to isolate the problem to the #4 cylinder and replaced the fuel injector, but every time the problem came back.

After a few months my wife noticed the coolant kept getting lower, and we were finally able to put it together that we had a blown head gasket. The starting issue was water pooling into the cylinder while it was off. Once I knew what the actual problem was I replaced the head gasket myself.

I'd like to say this fixed it, but it only worked for a week or two and water is in the same cylinder again. The only explanation I have left now for me is that the head has warped.

So I really hope it's your injector and that you don't have to go through the same headaches that we have had.

damn, i hope thats not my problem, it is running great now but its only been less than a week. i hope this isnt the issue, im broke after all the problems and i cant afford a new payment, we drop 1,000 a month for day car(two 3 year olds(twins).
i havent heard muh of this being a problem with toyotas, 3 of my friends have 99 4runners all over or at 200,000 miles, im the only one wiht probs. never been offroading, never missed an oilchange kept up with all maintaince.
im still nervous though everytrime i crank her up

When you had the head off you should have had it pressure tested and surfaced if it was good. You probably have a cracked head
