please help, i stumped the mechanics with this one

i have a 99 4 runner limited 2wd v-6.
ive been having issues when i turn the key on wiht it hesitating and fighting stalling, then the check engine light comes on and the hesitating goes away. we get a code that says misfire cylinder #5 , we put new plugs, new wires in and alot of other regular maintance, ran great this morning the same issue, took it back they replaced the coil and ran great.
an hour later only after shutting off then starting agian 5 minutes later starts the hesitating and jumping again, but it went away after 20 sec?
no chck engine light? any suggestions. it has 134,000 miles on it and just got 900.00 worth of work yesterday

Check your injector. Move it to another cylinder on the right bank and see if the misfire follows it. Why did you pay for $900 worth of work when it didnt fix the problem??
 
i needed a transmission flush, brake pads an o2 sensor and the air flow monitor went bad , new plugs and wires. the mechanic siad he was sure it was the plug and wires, then today he was sure it was the coil, but he gave me another used coil for free, and ill be back on monday to try somethng else, he also is a fourrunner drivver and licensed mechanic he worked for the dealer for 15 years
thank you for the injector suggenstion, i will try that i have ut cleaner in it but to no avial.
 
Well, I used coil isnt one of those parts to be replaced with a used one. Get a new one. Also I would try replacing the fuel filter. It jsut sounds like your fuel supply is cutting in and out somewhere.
 
ill try the fuel filter, the coil was just a step to try to find out what the problem, ive read alot of this problem tonnght but no body has sen to be able to fix, ive read 15 post about this but no solutions from someone who had it happen to them,

Have your mech do some diag work instead of throwing parts at it. He should have checked your plugs, wires, coils, injectors and compression before making any recommendations on the fix. Injector cleaner wont fix a bad injector
 
i agree, but i havent had my plugs/wires changed since 2001, 85,000 miles ago, it was way over do, it was my wifes car untill this past year she needed a bigger car (3 year old twins) so it is now mine. i appreciate all the help. he just figured all it was was the plugsdthen that wasnt it, then it had to be the coil. so on monday when i go back hell try something else. he used to work for our dealership. our toyota dealer in pensacola fl, is a real rip off n the service dept. they have been rumored to not fix or tighten certain things so youll be back. they wanted 650 to put new plugs and wires on.
 
hate to sund like neewb, but ive never heard of doing this on a 4runner, i had a rx-7 that had compression problems alot.

I recently got rid of a similar problem. Miss fire in bank #6. Changed the plugs with temporary improvement. When it came back I took it in and they told me my injector was clogged. About $400 bucks later it runs like a champ again.
 
thank you, i had the problem today, no check engine light but it hesitated and jumped for about 25 minutes, worse at lower speeds, ive already dropped 900.00 this week, i just wish they could fix it and be done, i am worried that i can do permanent damage to something driving it this way, i went back to the import mechanic and he is out sick today. i should probally just run it up to the stealership and drop my droors and bend over.
 
if you go to the dealer, they will want to go back thru everything this other guy already did. I wouldnt drive it unless you have to. I really think you have an injector going out. swap that #5 injector out to #1 and see if it follows
 
well ive ben at the toyota dealer for 2 days two seperate trips, thye put on a throtle sensor telling me that was it and the fuel injectors seem alright. same crap happened toaday, it has been
there for 4 hours and they cant faind anythig wrong , thye have a master technician in diagnosiing coming in tomorrow so the kept it over night. ive now stumped 2 mechanics, and the stealership also. i would swear it is a injector but they said it isnt . im thingking about leaving it there and picking up a fuel economizing death trap from toyota, but that thing has beeen our for alomost ten year longer thanmy dog and kids. its to sad to let her go
 
alright man, i hate to tell you this, but toyota is straight up SCREWING you on this one, they keep throwing parts at the problem not knowing what it is, costing YOU money, they are just making loads of money off of you right now. dont pay for another thing until they can guarantee the problem wont come back

this is just another reason i HATE stealerships
 
yeah they told me they will fix it his time and if they cant find whagts wrong they wont charge me. the regular import auto mechanic i had thur, friday is good too but he isnt around this week and i am a courier so i had to rent a car becuase i need to drive for work every weekday., this shite is getting really old.
 
they have really big car seats, our mothers live out of town they fly in to see the grand kids every other month, so we could barely squeze my 110 wife between the car seats. we always had to take 2 cars to go to the beach, or out to eat.

update: toyota called and said they now think it is the fuel injector after i told the import garage on thursday, friday, and toyota mon, tues, and wendsday 365.00 more i need to pay but if this isnt it they will fix what ever is wrong for free, =parts, she put it in writing for me this time.
so tomorrow something else will go wrong
8 years, 135,000 miles not one hiccup till last week.
