Please Help identify “OFFSET” on the wheels!!!

Hey guys! This is the 4runner of Rolling Chaos. I loved his wheels and tire setup, but he never mentioned what offset he had on his wheels. Can you guys tell me what you think it is exactly? Thanks!!!!

The tires are Duratrac’s 285/70/17
And the rims are called Ultra Gauntlet

Well those wheels come in +12, +25 and -12 offset so I'm guessing they are -12 because they stick out more than stock wheels.
 
That looks boss! I’m in the market for rims and tires too. My truck actually looks a lot like that because I have the ‘06 headlights, and mine is black too. I was looking at rims that are 17x9 with a -13mm offset, so if those actually are -12mm, I love the look! The only thing is that I’ll probably go with 275/70/17 just to avoid some of the potential cutting issues with 285s. That is pretty much the stance I’m after too, though.

But thanks for your help, in all honesty, i would guess they are -12mm, so thats probly wha till go with anyways... I have a front 3" lift and 1,5" in the rear. I also have 285/70/17 tires...

With these new rims, do you think i would rub at all? or would i have to trim?

Obviously the tire size creates some of the rubbing, but do you think a +12mm offset would have less interference? I don’t mean to hijack the op’s thread, but it seems we are on a similar path so no need to clutter the forum with multiple threads. If I was going for a similar look, but with a slightly smaller tire, like 275/70, would the positive offset help? I would obviously prefer the wider stance of the negative offset, but don’t want a world of fitment issues either. Don’t mind a little trimming, but I’m really concerned about control arm rubbing and stuff like that, which are much harder to remedy.

+12 will work better, but may not look as cool. The stock 4Runner wheels are 30mm and can't fit a 285/70/17 because they rub the spindle, and FJ stock wheels are 15mm and they can fit a 285/70/17 without rubbing the spindle.
 
Are these +1 offset? it doesnt specify -12 or +12 so i assume so... Im trying to see if its worth it to get these instead of the -12 offset rims i already found...
 
The poke looks the same as mine, which would indicate they're -12mm offset.

Running a higher offset puts threat of contact into the pinch weld along the rearward side of the fender... the body mount, and the frame.

Not to mention the upper control arm.

My tires are 285/60R18 because I wanted to keep a full sized spare under the truck... so 31.6" tall isn't really a good method of comparison. However, I've removed the front mud flaps, melted all the plastic on the rearward outer edge of the fender well, up out of the way. I still rub on the pinch weld under compression and slight turning.

Adding an inch more diameter would just exacerbate all these issues. Overall, the -12 offset does look awesome. Worth the effort to fit.

That’s some great info, and will help a lot, thanks! So, I was just looking at the specs again for the wheels I like, and they also come in a +10mm version. So based on what you are saying, I’d probably be best served to go with those instead, right? Obviously they won’t have quite as wide of a stance, but based on the specs for the stock wheels, they are still an additional 20mm outboard, and 5mm more than the FJ, which you also mentioned will work. This helps tremendously if I’m understanding correctly.

Yes, I would say a +10 would have less rubbing vs the -12. I don't have any first-hand experience with the +10, just by my guess.

Those are some great tools! Thanks! I saw mentioned above that the stock SR5 wheels are 30mm offset, but does anyone know the width? Trying to use that offset calculator but I guessed it was 8” on the width. I know the ones I’m looking at are 17 x 9.

Been looking around wheels myself a lot and the stock sizes for my 09 are:

16x7 +30mm
17×7.5 +30mm (SR5 option)
18x7.5 +25mm (limited)

Thanks for confirming the sizes. I have the standard SR5 5-spoke wheels in 17”. I’m pretty sure they still carried the same ones through ‘09, in fact I see them on most Tacomas as well.
 
I'm trying to understand this myself... I am installing longer upper control arms (Icons) so I want my new wheels to be further away from them I am assuming, which would mean I need greater than 30 or less than 30 offset?
So if I want to move the inside edge of the wheel away from the UCAs then I would need to go with less than 30 (factory) correct?

If you want more inner clearance you would need a lower offset. Correct. Use the offset calculator once you find a wheel you like, or wheel spacers can correct that problem as well.

I ordered a set of Mickey Thompson wheels in the 18x9 with +18 mm offset and after ordering was told these will hit the brake rotor so I have to return them and order a set in the 0 to +15 range. This is according to https://www.customwheeloffset.com staff. Does this sound right? I thought a lower number means further away from the inner workings. Would the 7.5 (stock) to 9 inch wheel increase make that +18 impossible to fit?

Rotor contact would have more to do with the overall wheel diameter (vs rotor diameter). Perhaps there was some mis-communication about rotor vs caliper? Some wheel face shapes aren't compatible with the 4R's 4-piston calipers, where the front side of the caliper is ginormous.

The offset has more to do with the shape of the inner/outer face of the wheel and (more specifically) the position of the barrel relative to the mounting face of the wheel.

The wheel needs a nice deep concave inner surface to clearance the caliper.

It seems odd that they'd bring up rotor clearance concerning an 18" wheel on a truck that comes stock with 16" wheels (or 17, depending).

Seems fishy but I don't know... I've surmised that M/T wheels can be particular on fitment as that some do and don't fit tacos of various vintages/configurations in the same model of wheel.
