Please help me install aftermarket Stereo w/pics

Hi All,

I recently bought a 1999 SR5 to replace my aging 1995 SR5.

I am trying to swap my JVC deck into the 99, but it uses the "Premium Toyota Sound System" and I can't figure out how to hook it up.

I purchased the new proper wiring harness from Best Kits, and it links up, I get power, but I'm not getting any sound. One thought I had is that the factory wiring cluster is not matching up with the Harness. However, there is also another cable that has no plug to go into my new deck, which is the smaller of the 2. I know the larger one is the antenna, so I am assuming the smaller diameter plug is the Amp. The instruction guide mentions that this system may have a factory amp, and I may need another part to hook up to it called a "SVEN4" peripheral device. I noticed my JVC deck has 2 RCA line OUTs on the back, maybe these somehow connect to that smaller Amp cable?

Also, my best kits wiring harness has no negative speaker wires and uses a common ground wire, so I connected all the speaker negatives from my new deck to the common ground on the harness...I'm not sure if that's correct but it makes sense. From all the googling I couldn't figure this one out. maybe that is the problem.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hmmm might be multiple things going on there as to why its not working.

1. Is that wiring kit you bought meant to use the factory Toyota amp ?

2. Your JVC has a built in amp correct ? Like its not a pre-amp H/U only ?

3. You don't use that Toyota amp with your JVC deck if JVC has built in amp .


The wiring adapter harness you should have , is one that plugs into the back of your JVC and goes to the factory Toyota speaker block AFTER the Toyota amp. Thats the way my JVC h/u is hooked up in my 98

JVC deck to Toyota SPEAKER harness AFTER factory Toyota amp. ( ditch the Toy amp )

Make any sense to you ?

Oh , in photo 3 , that small antenna lead will NOT be used with the JVC deck .

Yes- custom for the 4runner premium sound system, BUT- it does say on the harness instructions that a peripheral device (SVEN4) may be needed - maybe its needed to bypass the factory amp?

yes, I'm pretty sure it does.

So basically you are saying that my wiring harness from my jvc should not be connected to the wiring harness that the stock stereo connected to, but it should connect to another cluster that is located BEHIND (or beyond) that factory amp??

Rear line outs are useless unless connecting to an external amp i suppose too?

It's been a while since I did mine but how I wired mine up was like this . I bought a harness that went from my JVC deck to the other side of the factory Toyota amp ( I tossed the amp away in other words ) and out to the factory speakers .

Basically , most h/u's put out 100 watts peak these days and your running that INTO the Toyota amp , with the harness you bought . Thats the way I understand it as your describing things .
Thats a lot of 'drive' into the factory amp !

Your line outs on the deck are great if your using an external amplifier ( Alpine , Rockford etc....) . That is the way mine is setup now , I use the pre outs on my deck to power an amp for front components and rears and another amp powers my sub .

If it were me , I would return that harness and ask for one that goes from your deck to the factory speaker wires.

It's one of those things that if your there it takes about 20 seconds to explain and everyone gets it . Typing it is different LOL

That harness should work. Like xjeepguy said, just bypass the factory amp. The new harness, once wired to the JVC HU, should plug right into the vehicle harness that plugged into the amp. The factory amp is no longer needed.

I just looked at your photos again . The last photo , you wired up that new harness to the factory wires that plugged into the Toyota amp ? Undo that and wire those into the factory speaker wires instead .

I skimmed past the last couple photos , I thought you had a complete harness from that company , I didn't realize you had wired it to something yourself . NOW I understand

Remove and Toss the OE Amp.

Yeah, I just finished installing a new Kenwood deck from the old bulky stock deck in my 1999 4Runner Limited. I ran into the same problem with the OE amp(Big gray piece of metal with a pigtail that attached to the stock deck, and is only held in place with two screws). I just tossed it and there were two connectors plugged into the amp that will be used for ALL speaker, powers, ground, and antenna control wiring. I picked up the adapter connectors from Autozone and all wire colors matched up between the deck harness and adapter harness, so it was SIMPLE to wire it all together. The only other thing you will need is a stereo install kit that has a tray to sit under the deck to cover up all the extra space that isn't used anymore by the big bulky stock stereo deck. I hope this helps everyone out!! I plugged my deck in for the first time with the wired together harness and everything worked including the power retractable antenna. DON"T HACK UP any OE harnesses, the adapter connectors are easy to find in almost every auto parts store with a car audio section, and all wires are in the correct location already.
