Hey all. Thanks in advance for any advice offered. I really want a 2010 or 2011 Limited 4x4 4Runner, preferably CPO. There are a couple I have found but the dealers are asking what seems like high prices for them :dammit:

2010 Limited 4x4 4Runner 65000 miles $34,200 OTD (I had someone stop by and ask about this one and they got an offer)

2011 Limited 4x4 4Runner 42000 miles $38,000 asking price

These are both certified used toyotas. I would be so grateful if you all would offer me some negotiating tips/strategies/advice before I go to battle with the sales people :vader:

I think my high end out the door price is $31000. Is that reasonable?

Thanks again in advance!

Tell them that you refuse to take anything but highest price and that you're a big fan of highway robbery.

All the used trucks at my local dealership hover between 28-33k. You're getting jacked your dealership.

Start by going to a few used sites and get representative prices. Kbb.com, carmax, autotrader, etc.. That will give you a price range even though you may not see actual condition..then you have some history to start with. FWIW, $38K for a used 4x4 LE seems high...

well to be meet current Toyota CPO the vehicle has to have the following :

Each candidate for certification can be a current model year vehicle, up to and including six year old models, with 85,000 miles or less on the odometer.

Certification

lexus CPO is even more restrictive, but you can still get new car rates on CPO were as Toyota is still considered used car rates.

6 model years or newer/less than 70,000 miles

Thanks! This is a good reference point for price

No problem. I did the TrueCar route and while the dealer wasn't happy I definitely was. The dealer wasn't the cheapest but it was the only one that had the Nautical Blue one with KDSS. I didn't let them know this was the one I wanted and said I would walk if they didn't match a dealer 15 min up the road. They beat the other dealers price by $500. Got her with all of 6 miles on it.

I'm in the same boat as you. Looking for a used, 5th Gen. LE 4x4. I've found in Colorado that a 2010 or 2011 with about 40-50k miles is within my price range of $32k. I've also found that Carmax is usually $1-2k more expensive than other dealers, but of course they offer some benefits too (decent trade in value, 3 day return no questions asked, 60 or 90 day warranty, etc.). The trucks hold their value so well I'm thinking about just buying new and financing it for a longer period of time. Let us know what you end up paying.

Dealerships typically markup trades at 3-5k above the trade in price.
based on KBB and Nada, I think the dealership probably got that in at 30k, cheaper if they bought it at auction.
I don't know the exact options, but a the 2011 has a retail of 35.5k and a private party value of 33k. I think 31k OTD is unrealistic, but 33-34k plus TTL sounds about right from the dealership.

Be Knowledgable

The best strategy is to know what the car is actually worth, decide what you'll pay, and stick to it.

All the online sources will tell you a range. You need to decide whether you are willing to wait for the low end of the range. In my experience the more information you have and display to the dealer, the less likely they are to screw around with you.

FWIW, I was looking for a 2014 Limited. MSRP was 43,800. They tried to convince me to buy a 2012 Limited with 13K they would sell me for $39,400. I got the 2014 Limited at invoice for 41,100. Best deal possible? Probably not. Worth $5K to me for a truck with 2 miles when I picked it up? Yep.

It's all what you value, how long you can wait, and how much effort you want to give.

I appreciate the comments but I don't think there are any answers yet to negotiating with them.

try this: http://www.edmunds.com/tmv.html

gives you an idea of what others are paying for similar vehicles in the area.

FYI - i paid $28,800 in April of 2013 for a CPO 2010 Limited with Nav. Was a few hundred over 30K OTD after taxes, title and all that BS.

Make your OTD price offer, if they dont accept it move on to another seller. Who knows, maybe they will call you back after a week and accept it. Thats what the toyota dealer did with my wife's Lexus.

The other thing to note is that region plays a big factor in value of a vehicle, you'd think it shouldn't. But unfortunately it does.

I was working 3 dealerships and $41k including fees was as low as I could get anyone to go for my 2014 limited.

I have a post with the dealer printout and price when I ordered mine in the 2014 thread.

it was around 42xxx, and 15k for trade in. my sig has the options I ordered it with.

they sold my trade in for 17k.
