Wow, thanks for chiming in! Hope I didn't offend by posting it.

So how bad was the break, if you don't mind me asking? Do you expect to get full function back?

not at all man it doesnt bother me im used to the negative comments i made a mistake so im not mad. just glad i had my go pro!

the break was a wide spread fracture i had surgery same day have a plate and 6 screws now. ill be back to normal in 7 weeks or so. ill post xray pics later.

I'm glad you're okay. That looked very painful! I'm surprised that wasn't a compound fracture but it could have been a lot worse had the vehicle slipped into the tree with your arm in there. Do you usually wheel with some sort of medical kit with you? If so, look into Sam splints to add to your kit. They are a sturdy but moldable splint that you can comfort to the broken or injured limb, then wrap the limb and splint together with an ace wrap or equivalent. They're cheap and reusable too.

so just gonna throw my advice on there about the sam splints, great tool but a lot of times can be a bad idea, i know the idea is to immobilize the injury and thats great and all but that can also be a two sided sword. if you immobilize it in the wrong position(especially if for too long) the bone and muscles ect can start to refuse and you will be doing more damage as later on that bone will have to be re-broken at the hospital. -now thats not the end of the world because you are at the hospital, but it can cause bone fragments to completely separate and float around in your arm. in this case no big deal because he had to have surgery anyways, but something like that could cause a lesser fracture to become more serious and cost more and be more invasive and cause more "down" time, more recovery time and effort ect.
my knowledge and experience comes from being an EMT and working in SAR with wilderness rescues, and my wife who is an OR nurse -she see the messy end of this stuff -yes its way worse in the OR than on scene. when we are doing long distance extractions we have to calculate how we are going to immobilize, and how long its going to take them to get to a hospital and how long they have been there before we got to them. if its a short time then we have no issues with this, but if you are a ways out say like 4hr+ then we start to get worried -we dont always get the luxury of getting a helicopter(myth) sometimes we just have to pack the person out and so these come into play

-also placement of someone who doesnt know how to use one or set one up can cause damage by giving the person a sense of "oh im good i have a splint so it cant move it" and then the move it and try to use it and that can make things worse

just food for thought for everyone -great product if used correctly

Great info kid! My experience with Sam splints derives from army aviation and usasoc medics that give us crew dogs a basic course and we also get some pretty good annual courses for combat scenarios. You are 100% correct on the bad sides of a Sam splint. But IMO: I wouldn't hesitate to use one. For someone who doesn't know how to put a broken limb in place, you're better off to splint it as it is and get to an er ASAP!

Another good note of the Sam splint is that it can be stored using little space and is very universal for splinting.

I did this once. Same kinda situation, against a tree. Instead of breaking my arm I put a big dent in my 4runner behind the door (first gen).

Could feel my arm bend though, not a good feeling.
