I would like to start a dialog on tranny temps. Any of you that have installed a transmission temperature gauge, please post the following info:
> Tranny temps noticed (fahrenheit please)
> At what ambient temperature
> Where the sensor is located (pan, line out, after cooler, etc.)
> What you were doing (city driving, towing & weight, offroad, mountains, etc.)
> Any additional tranny coolers?
I'll go first. >Sensor in the pan, extra large tranny cooler< In the recent temps around Phoenix of 114 degrees, I logged a tranny temp of 199 in city driving.
In towing (GVW 10,300 lbs.) up a several thousand foot grade in 105 ambient, it very briefly hit 235.
I talked this week with a local Toyota service dept., and a local transmission shop. They both said these temps were nothing to be concerned about, especially in this heat. Every source I've contacted seems to indicate that Toyotas love the heat! (e.g. many 3rd world armies main vehicles seem to be Toyota trucks!) Even the owner's manual doesn't list heat as being an extreme factor for increasing maint. intervals.
FYI - I just had the fluid exchanged too.
So please post you tranny temps and/or thoughts on this subject.
