Plow truck took my 16 Trail out.... Need damage advice

Who here has ever recovered for "diminished value"?
I've tried, but gave up because the process is difficult in my state and the amount they said I might be able to recover was going to be a wash compared to the cost of the appraisal (or value research or whatever they call it) and attorney. I got much more money just refusing to sign their settlement because my back was still sore, I just kept dragging it out.

Good question. I'll be interested to see any responses.

I asked my ins agent (Amer Fam) about it last year ... "we don't offer that".

I have, twice. Both times some douches hit my car. First time was my M3, second was my 4Runner. DV varies state by state so I can only speak regarding GA. It's automatic here thanks to GA law, whereas in some states you have to fight for it or whatnot. Insurance will obviously do their utmost to screw you over by using a formula that favors them (16c if I recall). For $2k in damage to my 2016 4runner with 1200 miles (bumper bad to be replaced), they gave me $850. For my M3, it too was very new, and $1200 in damage got them to send me a check for $700. Neither is/was realistic when it comes time to sell. There are places that will furnish a report for a fee, usually the amount of DV they claim is higher and they provide info to help if you want to fight the insurance company.

Some states seem to be better about DV and some seem to be worthless. Usually you can find the facts with some googling.

$7,500

I haven't, but I helped one of my good friends do it when someone backed into his 1 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee a few years back. He was in a parking lot at a restaurant when a kid backed into him, hitting the right rear quarter of his Jeep. It was a low-speed collision.

After he had the car fixed, he took it to a body shop where they gave him a written report showing the repairs and how it affected the value. I forget the exact number but it showed a value impact of around $9,000 That report cost him $200-$300. He sent that to the kid's insurance company, and they told my friend they don't pay Diminished Value claims.

My friend then hired an attorney to send a letter to the Insurance Company. That started the negotiation process. He settled at $7,500 from the $9,000 estimate. I saw the check and got a steak dinner out of the deal.

The moral of the story is that (at least in Illinois) you can get paid for a Diminished Value claim but the Insurance companies will make you work for your money.

Wow, today I learned that Toyota is still spraying cars with single stage paint.

That makes my decision between white and Mag Gray pretty easy. Single stage paint on a $40k+ vehicle in 2018 is ridiculous.

To OP--find the best body shop in town and drop off the car there. Unless it's an issue over whether the car is going to be totaled or not, you shouldn't have to be doing any fighting with the adjuster. That's for the body shop to deal with.

What's so bad about single-stage paint? Its harder right? Oxidizes a bit faster but scratches less.

I'm guessing they do it with white because they don't need a clear coat to make it look shiny.
