PLZ HELP!!! Feels like my drivetrain is losse and cant find problem

Hello everybody, I'm new to this forum and hope yall can give me some good advise oand help. Ok I have a 1998 T4R automatic 4x4 and I have a problem and would like to know if someone else is or has expirienced the same problem. The drivetrain on my Runner seems to be loose.....it'll shift hard at times, but biggest concern is when I come to a complete stop it feels like my tranny shifts out of place. It is a nasty feeling when i feel that thump as if my engine and tranny are loose. I can't really find the pronblem...could it be motor or tranny mounts or something else. The weirdest thing is that i use to have a 97 4runner 2 wheel drive and it did the same thing, but not as bad as my 98. Is there something I can do to fix this or to help me fins out the problem. Thank you all for taking the time to read.

u joints could be a prob. how many miles on your 4runner? i just dropped my rear drive shaft off today at the shop to have it serviced w all new joints.
 
It has 150K miles and I checked my u-joints and they seem fine. My motor and tranny both feel very loose when i come to stops
 
i would inspect the transmission mount on the corssmember. I have also replaced that on mine before too.... you dont have an auto-locker in rear do you.?
 
what is an auto-locker and how would i kn ow if i have one. why did u replace ur tranny mount, what was ur runner doing??
 
ok. you dont have an auto-locker. you just confirmed that.

and i have a 5 speed, and was noticing a whole lot of movement with both of my shifters when applying gas and going over bumps. this told me that s*** was shakin too much down there
 
That might be my problem...i get tons of play on both the shifter for the tranny and differential when accelarting and stopping and also when i go over speedbumps or holes...cool thanks for the info...really appreciate it
 
yes. but thats easy. just a few bolts. just make sure you get the jack up on the trans before you unbolt the crossmember so that when it comes off the trans wont be hanging. spray all of em w PB blaster the day before so they come off easy. and dont over torque any bolts that are attached to the transmission itself.

Ps- got my driveshaft back from the shop yesterday....MMMMMMMM. talk about a new ride feeling. its wonderful, just wonderful.
