Which sub should I buy? Why?

I'm a fan of Polk components and interior speakers, not an Alpine fan at all, but have no experience with either subwoofer, if it were me, I'd go Polk.

Well, as much as I like Polk...between those two subs, the Alpine seems like the choice. I've read alot about how much people like the Alpine Type R's.
The Alpine doesn't need as large of an enclosure...has a bit better RMS & peak power rating...I like the Fs number better (will go lower before reaching it's resonant frequency)...the vas spec even though it's only one point lower, means the sub is overall more stiff to fight air pressure and *should* be a "tighter" sub in terms of sound and also needs less enclosure volume to work correctly (which is confirmed by the spec that shows sealed box volumes).
A plus for the Polk is the 3 year warranty, if that's something that matters to you. Looks like the Polk would be happier in a sealed enclosure.
A couple things to consider first would be what kind of sound are you after? What type of enclosure were you thinking of building? What amp & power will you be supplying it?

I will have it in a ported Box, Sound Quality is key, 500 watts at 2 OHMS.

Are you dead set on using a single 10"...are you replacing a 10"?
Reason I ask is that if you were open to another size...the new Alpine Type-R 8" is getting great reviews. It's the SWR-823 & 843. One of these can be perfectly happy in a ported enclosure size of around .5-.6 cu.ft. which will take up less real estate in the back of your Runner, and it'll take every bit of that 500 watts plus more if you upgrade later. Just something to think about

This 8" is the one I've chosen to install into my Runners' OEM JBL enclosure in the rear quarter.
Here's a post from Jim Walter (Alpine engineer) on an audio forum I'm on, where he did some testing between a 1043D sealed and the 843D ported...pretty interesting outcome.

for Now im dead set on the 10' cause i got a JL 10' Ported Box. and im using a rockford Fosgate Prime 500-1

I have the polk sr 10" and I love it it sounds great, I'm not a fan of alpine speakers either... now their head units are a different story
I have the Alpine 1043 Type R In a sealed box and it hits hard and tight, I heard it in a ported box and OMG the sub hits real hard, it will rattle your windows. My friend has a Polk MM 10" SVC and that sub is also good nice thing with the polk is it will fit in a shallow box where the alpine does need some depth. The polk also hits hard and tight also. We are both running the same amp alpine PDX5 one other thing is the alpine does require a little more power than the Polk MM and has a higher RMS ratting. But if your unsure do what I did and goto a store that has them and have them bring it out to your vehicale so you can hear them on your system with your amp and in your vehicale. Hearing the Subs in a showroom just wasnt good enough for me.
