How many owners? : I am the 2nd Owner

Mine leaks oil onto the engine and it burns it off. Pretty embarrassing sitting at a stop light with plumes of smoke coming from my engine bay at times.

Yes, burns about a litre and a half every 3000 miles according to the guys ay Jiffy Lube.

Resurrecting a nearly 5 year old thread, isn't ideal for voicing your concern. No one has even noticed your question, (other than me) apparently.

The first thing I would do, is have a qualified Mechanic check for leaks. Ie: valve cover gaskets, rear main seal, etc.

If no significant leaks are found, then I'd have that same qualified Mechanic verify any oil usage. Have him fill it to the full mark on the dipstick, note the vehicle mileage, then check the oil level every 1000 miles. Most manufacturers don't consider oil usage of less than 1 qt per 1k miles, to be excessive. If the oil usage is more than 1 qt per 1k miles, than you have to decide whether it's worthwhile to fix it.

Also, if you haven't done so, I'd replace your PCV valve, before determining any oil usage.

What happened at 143k that lead you needing a new motor, you being the original owner?
I ask cause I have the same motor in my 96' at 213k I'm still going strong like day 1.

Under normal driving conditions why would there be any burn off?

Oil is splashed onto the cylinder walls to lubricate the piston rings and cool the pistons. Some of it is going to end up in the combustion chamber.


I loose less than a quart between 5k mile oil changes. Have a little over 200k on the truck.

My 01 started to burn oil somewhere around 100k miles.

Lose about 1/2 quart every 5000 miles on my 99 5vz. Bad exhaust valve seals (seen a puff of blue smoke once or twice in the AM) on the right bank. Too lazy to replace at the moment so installed a catch can to catch the blowby. Second owner.

Maxlife has helped as well in controlling the burn off. That and a new OEM PCV every year.

I checked about once a week for a month, it doesn't burn a drop. If it does, not enough to notice on the dipstick, no smoke either. Runs like a top.

Over 81% say No burning oil, please! 100% burn oil, by design. I suppose the 81% mean they cannot measure the loss, perhaps its being replaced by moisture in the air but all internal combustion engines burn SOME amount of oil. Mine will go thru 1/2 quart over 5000 miles. :cowboy:

First off, moisture in the air cannot replace oil in the engine. So yeah .... :snacker:

Secondly, there are many engine designs out there that burn oil at a noticeable rate after 150K or 200K miles. A small amount down isn't unusual with other engines on the road in America.

What this poll and all the other evidence shows is that the 3.4 V6 is not one of those engines. It really shouldn't be burning any noticeable amount of oil in between oil changes.

Yes they can burn a little from design but not enough to be seen no the dip stick.

This is not a rotary engine. LOL.
