There is a knock in the engine that the mechanic has no idea but says dont waste time and money on replacing gasket until we figureout the knock. Gasket is where all my oil is leaking!

No!

Even after our 3500 mile trip tp Colorado and South Dakota, level never changed on dipstick.

Does your engine burn oil? : No
How many miles? : 105,000

Does your engine burn oil? : No
How many miles? : 375,500
What Engine? : 3.4
What Year? : 1996
How many owners? 2 including myself

No !

I do not burn a drop of oil.

I have a 1998 with about 250,000 miles on it. I regularly changed oil every 7500 miles with the cheapest stuff I could buy. I towed heavily with it, and once had to put in 4 quarts.

Does not burn a drop to this day. I do treat it nicer now. I change the oil every 10K with Mobil 1.

Like to change my poll answer to "No"

Does your engine burn oil? : No
How many miles? : 97,778
What Engine? : 3.4
What Year? : 1998
How many owners? Just me! :)

So,nobody burns a drop? You should see a normal small amount burned by nature of it doing it's job. I'm sure if you did an accurate measurement of the oil in and oil out there will be a difference.

I've done this 3 times in the last 23k miles (3 changes) and I saw a consistent rate of burn to be less than a quarter quart which is great for any 4Runner engine regardless of miles.

My turbo Eclipse ran through a quart every 3000 miles but to be fair it was driven hard almost all the time and being a turbocar they naturally burn more oil even synthetic but synthetic resists it to a higher temp.

I can't say for sure I'm not burning a tiny amount but, I fill it to the top and check it before I drain it and it's still at the top.
Checking it at varying degrees of warmed up probably isn't giving me the most accurate pic.

I'd say it's less than a quarter of a quart considering the low to high fill lines have like a quart and a quarter between the two.

Interesting. For some reason it sounds about right. Let's say you have a vehicle that doesn't leak oil, and has its oil changed every 5,000 miles. Under normal driving conditions why would there be any burn off?

This poll is flawed in that you ask how much oil burned per month.

For you that might be 10K miles for me that might be 200 miles. ;-)

Miles would be a better guage. ;-)

That being said, my 2002 3.4 with 97K miles burns exactly 1/8 quart every 4K miles.

Few vehicles made can achieve the type of record the 3.4 has. My old mans 283 Chevy was one. 213K miles and the car burned less than was measureable on the dipstick. Fact.:wink2:

I was just reading my manual and came across this interesting note about oil consumption on page 225.

ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION
It is normal that an engine should
consume some engine oil during
normal engine operation. The
causes of oil consumption in a normal
engine are as follows.
Oil is used to lubricate pistons,
piston rings and cylinders. A thin
film of oil is left on the cylinder
wall when a piston moves downwards
in the cylinder. High negative
pressure generated when the
vehicle is decelerating sucks some
of this oil into the combustion
chamber. This oil as well as some
part of the oil film left on the cylinder
wall is burned by the high temperature
combustion gases during
the combustion process.
Oil is also used to lubricate the
stems of the intake valves. Some
of this oil is sucked into the combustion
chamber together with the
intake air and is burned along with
the fuel. High temperature exhaust
gases also burn the oil used to
lubricate the exhaust valve stems.
The amount of engine oil consumed
depends on the viscosity of the oil,
the quality of the oil and the conditions
the vehicle is driven under.
More oil is consumed by high- speed
driving and frequent acceleration and
deceleration.
A new engine consumes more oil,
since its pistons, piston rings and cylinder
walls have not become conditioned.
When judging the amount of oil
consumption, note that the oil may
become diluted and make it difficult
to judge the true level accurately.
As an example, if a vehicle is used
for repeated short trips, and consumes
a normal amount of oil, the dipstick
may not show any drop in the oil
level at all, even after 1000 km (600
miles) or more. This is because the
oil is gradually becoming diluted with
fuel or moisture, making it appear that
the oil level has not changed.

1998 3.5L 5 speed
never burns oil
change w/ Castrol Syntec 5W30 every 5,000 and K&N filter

212,000 miles still 19/22 mpg depending on traffic

Does your engine burn oil? : No
How many miles? :130,000
What Engine? : 2.7
What Year? : 1998
How many owners? : second owner

Good post Satter, every engine has to burn a little oil or the oil isn't doing it's job and mine appears to burn very little to nothing but it's the moisture and fuel residual that replaces the burned oil but if your dipstick still shows nothing to little burned then you know your motor is in good shape.

Does your engine burn oil? : No
How many miles? : 125k (200k km)
What Engine? : 2.7
What Year? : 1998
How many owners? : 3rd Owner (from 132km)

Never burns oil and oil is always a clean looking brown when I check it.

Oil is changed every 5 - 6000 kms (~3500 mi)

06 v6 4runner Ltd. 145000 miles.
Yes, burns about a litre and a half every 3000 miles according to the guys ay Jiffy Lube.

Help!!! :(

2015 Rav 4, 14k miles, no detectable oil use.

2001 4runner, 59k miles, no detectable oil use.

1998 rav 4, 260k miles, seems to lose about 1/2 quart between 4k mile changes.

love all 3 vehicles
