Yeah, mine seems to have dead-zone around 2700-3500 rpm. It feels like it really takes off at 3500. I am in the same boat as you, OP. I had to relearn how to drive, I mostly just cruise in this truck. I average between 18 and 19 mpg with a lift and 33s, and plenty of extra weight hauling around. I have a souped up twin turbo F150 (wife's DD) and an older Big Block F250 that I alternate driving with the 4Runner. If I am in a hurry or have a need for speed, I take one of the Fords. It is funny (read: disappointing) to hop in the 4Runner after the F250, since the 460 won't go over 4500 RPM, and pulls like a freight train off idle.
Long story short: This engine ain't winning any contests of speed, but that's ok, Just roll down your back window and enjoy the ride.

I'm a 5 speed so I see 3k+ everyday. Also heel toe is a skill of addiction. Having nice exhaust only encouraged me more.
