Poll: Toyota Extra Care Extended Warranty: Yea or Nay?

I have 2016 Pro with 18k miles, sitting at dealer now for my 20k service. Debating all of this stuff in my head is hard to come to conclusion...

I’m also at point to decide if I want to do the $329 toyotacare plus for services until 4 years /45k Miles. There was a line behind me so I didn’t want to hold everyone up looking at the sheet they showed me, but I did drop AAA once I bought the 4runner because of the free toyota roadside assistance. So two more years of that and 4 more services (only two oil changes ) plus a mini detail on top at next service if I buy it. But on some sheet they had a long list of suggested items to replace at 30k and 40k and said the 30k costs $232 by itself and the 40k cost $189. But reading forums it sounds like people say they still just do oil change and tire rotations plus a few new filters. What’s the big items on the 30k and 40k or 45k? And do they do them for sure or just make it seem like I’ll get my money back guaranteed plus two more years roadside and a free detail? My AAA used to be about $100 a year so this would

I have a year left on warranty and no decision but probably gonna do extended care. In LA having service done even at another shop will be expensive so may as well pay the $300 and have maybe a slightly better assurance they are checking up on the inspection items and keeping an eye out for any potential issues versus doing just oil changes. I think the 30k service that is next will include a bunch of filters and stuff that make it worth it as I wouldn’t likely run to store and do that stuff myself (lazy ha).

I bought a extended warranty for my 2012 LTD, my XRAS started leaking at 32k so it was still covered under the original warranty, it again leaked at 65K my $850 warranty covered $3500 in repairs so I would say it's worth it.
Also at 88K i my XRAS leaked again and my dealership said they would trash the XRAS system and put on regular shocks for free all I would have to pay was the alignment.

So I'd say YES

Interesting poll. I just got the 20K service flyer in the mail yesterday and included was an offer for a 2 year extension of ToyotaCare for $329.00. Not sure if it is worth it since I'm getting a decent amount of mileage early on in the life of my Runner (over 18K in 5 months). Curious to see what others with the high mileage/young vehicle combo have done.

144K Miles on a SR5 4Runner purchased September 2014. I do all the maintenance myself plus the normal wear items like brake pads and rotors. No other issues.

Would never buy extended warranty. If the car reliability is that suspect that you need extended warranty, why buy that car?

Fair point. Never went with the extended warranty based coming to the same conclusion.

I do not trust warranties, well really the people interpreting there responsibility to the buyer. I would rather just get rid of a problem vehicle apposed to dealing with someone over warranty work.

I have just purchased a used 2016 Toyota 4 Runner Trail Premium with only 22,500 kilometres. Still has balance of the factory warranty; 36,000 km to September 2019 and 100,000 km to September 2021. I am thinking about buying the extended 7 year ... 120,000 km warranty, BUT, in Canada, the dealer wants almost $2,000.
Why is the warranty so much more expensive in Canada than the USA?
I am still searching for opinions of the extended warranty. It is a Toyota warranty, not aftermarket.
I will not be modifying the truck or going off-road.

had an actuator fail, AC motor fail, door latch fail.. all covered.

shocks that wore out sooner, Toyota care covered it.

Total cost for Ext warranty was 1800, Warranty paid out 5,500 worth of repairs.

Wow. How many miles on that bad boy? That seems like a lot of failure points for a younger unit. Glad you got the warranty though.

I got an extended warranty for my other cars (a Mazda and a Honda) that have more features like driver's assist doohickies (blind spot monitoring, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, etc). I was thinking this kind of tech is relatively new with limited field testing and the electronics would be expensive to replace. The 4Runners are behind in tech so I feel comfortable not having an extended warranty. Besides prior to the 4th gen, I owned a 3rd gen for 17 years and 200,000 miles and the only major repair was that a fuel injector needed replacing and I had to replace a catalytic converter. Both went out after 9 years/100,000 miles which is one of the longer and more expensive warranties to purchase.

If you do buy, be sure to buy online and not at your local dealer. I was able to reduce the price by 60% by buying from an out of state dealer and they're honored by any dealer in the US. [Sorry Florida residents can not buy their factory warranties out of state]. Whatever you do, don't buy a warranty from a 3rd party company. Many of those are the ones that have misleading clauses and they don't pay.

One thing to consider when buying an extended warranty, is that you have to show proof that you're following the manufacturers maintenance schedule. You may also be limited on what mods you make.

Here is the platinum warranty coverage directly from Toyota. I’m going to cancel my credit union extended warranty and purchase this one right before my new vehicle warranty expires.

I'm sure however I travel quite a bit for my work and I'm not the car repair type.

I left it at the dealer and they fixed it. I even got a car rental so it was an easy button for me.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you but I bought a used 08 SE from a toyota dealer. The Rig was not a certified but only had 72K miles on it with a nice service record. After my research with what could break I decided to buy the Toyota Platinum Plan. I've had front Calipers replaced, sway bar mounts and boots, XREAS fix / replaced 2x.

I'm no mechanic but handy. At this time I have 3K miles left on my plan and I personally believe I've truly got my money's worth.
