Does anyone know about a Toyota service bulletin regarding problems with the brakes on the 2002 4 Runner? The bulletin is not shared with the public. The brakes on my 4 Runner are poor. I have heard that Toyota has paid for upgraded brakes from the 2004 model in some cases. Is anyone aware of an aftermarket supplier of a better braking setup (calipers, rotors, etc.)?

Can you elaborate on your braking performance? What does it do? Pedal hits the floor while braking? Shuddering while braking?
My 4Runner has awesome brakes. It reminds me of the brakes on my 93 Celica, but better since this has ABS.

The brakes don't have much stopping power. I have a friend who has a 2002 Toyota pickup truck that had the same issue and he also had a lot of problems with rotors warping. He told me that both vehicles use the same front brakes and that his dealer told him about the service bulletin. He had the brakes from a 2004 pickup installed and they are much better.

I've always thought the brakes on my '00 were somewhat suspect but I've always attributed that to the rear drums. My Lightning had way stronger brakes in part because of it's 4-disc setup. my wife always makes me nervous in traffic because I think she follows a little too close.
I notice a slight pulsing in the '00 that slows as the vehicle does. But I've had it looked over (the entire vehicle, inspection, etc.) and no mechanic has ever mentioned my rotors needing replacing.

I seem to have the same problem. They don't seem to respond to well. However I had to change over two lanes and swerve past a F-250 and stop a redlight. That was fun. haha.

Why don't you just upgrade to the tundra brakes?

I think I will be doing this in a few days, it looks easy and is cheap if you can get the calipers from a junk yard. I will get new rotors though

one thing to check depending on mileage is the condition of your rear axle seals....if they are starting to deteriorate then it may be releasing grease and oils into the rear drum, contaminating the rear shoes and reducing stopping power. I just had to do that with mine when I got my brakes done.
