Poor mileage on 4G, would you participate in a suit?

Would you participate in a suit vs toyota?

I get 20 hwy and 18 city during the summer and 16.5 city and 18.2 hwy in the winter on my V8 4WD so I can not complain at all. I did get 11.5 a couple weeks ago pulling a 5000# trailer though. . . . . love the V8.:naughty:

people on this forum are so biased and favor Toyota, I honestly think your wasting your time and all this thread is good for is stirring people up at this point. oh, and we all know clockwork is just an antagonist, I've personally said so in more than one thread, so don't worry about him, he's "opinionated, mmk" ( i will send you an interweb cookie if you can figure that one out LOL)
You know what, I totally agree with you with regards to being pro Toyota. In all honesty this truck was my dream car & I had a poster up of it on my cubicle wall. It still is and I’d like to keep it till it rusts & falls apart but in between now and then I’d still like to get my mileage back. I also have a 2004 RAV4 that still performs as it has since day 1 brand new so the argument that a 2007 is an old car etc etc doesn’t hold much water.
As far as wasting my time, maybe/maybe not. At least I’ve learned how to multi quote! I think if we keep this going I might be able to improve my writing skills e.g. grammar etc.
As for Clockwork, since he’s notorious its all good. Everyone’s entitled to an opinion on the interwebs.
When I got drafted for Nam...we all had to take the test....When I was drafted the highest possible GT score was 130. I scored 126. I don't know what it is now.
***Thank you for your service Mike, 11B? Hooah! Max GT still is 130, I scored a 129. Of course that was over 7 years ago so who knows what I’d get if I took it again.
The point is your NOT taking into account the gas now using Ethanol and your bigger tires...Those are contributing factors that can DRASTICALLY effect your gas mileage. You seem to IGNORE that.
***I am taking these into consideration, still trying to find a station using 100% pure gas. Know of any in the NYC area? I’ll drive within reasonable distance just to test this theory out. As far as the tires, 265/70 is not that big of a diff. If anyone is selling 265/65 in the NYC area PM me. I’ll change it out just to prove this theory.
And you still don't understand what a class action suit is.
***I’m gonna leave this one alone and say you win because you’re an attorney right?
You also don't know how to calculate gas mileage. Sorry...but it's a fact. You CAN NOT calculate gas mileage that way. You can only calculate it by taking the number of gallons you added during a fill-up and divide that into the number of miles you've driven since your last fill-up.
***Not sure if you’ve read through this thread but I’ll say it again. I do hand calcs, exactly how you’re describing it. If you’re still insisting that I’m doing it wrong then I’ll tell the other two guys I personally know who own the same truck that they’re also doing it wrong & that he’s imagining the fact that he used to get better MPGs.

So your V8 gets better mileage in the winter than my v6 does in the summer. Rub some more salt on my wounds pls !! 

Well until you actually find out if Ethanol is influencing your gas mileage..then it's kinda silly to even think about a Class-Action Lawsuit isn't it??

I’m gonna leave this one alone and say you win because you’re an attorney right?

Nope...Just a Director or Software Development for a small Telecom company. It doesn't take much to do a google search to find out what it takes for a Class Action Lawsuit. Took me all of 20 seconds.

I do hand calcs, exactly how you’re describing it.

If you do..then why did you mention the part about the other driver's range indicator. It's one or the other isn't it??

You are NOT going to win this....Give it up. If you think you're getting burned..then sell the 4runner and move on. You'll spend more money in legal fees pursuing this then any loss money because of the suspected decreased gas mileage.

This thread is a riot!

First post here, I am actually looking to sell my dream truck, a 1996 FZJ Toyota because my ski trips are costing me around 120 bucks round trip in gas with my average fuel economy of around 11MPG.. I am looking to get into a 2005 4Runner V8 because you guys talking about 16-18MPG sounds fantastic!

haha,

in my opinion if your driving a V8 huge SUV with all sorts of power from the 2000's you shouldnt be expecting much better than 19-20 MPG on a flat highway doing 65 ever :peace:

New Thread!!!!!!

Why stop at sueing Toyota??? Let's sure the oil companies for Ethanol and while we are at it!

Lets file another class action lawsuit against Mother Nature. The winter kills my MPG and I hate it, so rather than move, buy a new car, or drive less let's sue her! Ronsta even stated, "I’ve already planted 25 trees in my yard 6 of which are dead." What the heck, if I buy something I expect it to perform as advertised. Dead trees???? I want some shade UP IN HERE!!! Open you pocketbook mother nature, cuz this guy is looking for a hand out!!!! So Gay

Ronsta, I am gonig out on a limb here and assuming that by referencing the NYC area you are really from LI. I hope I am right because that explains a lot. I would sue the local barber for that terrible blowout too. Maybe trade in your 4Runner for a 3series coupe so you can match all your boys!!! I guess I would be mad too if I spent money on gas that was supposed to go to Jager Bombs and Ed hardy T-Shirts. :barf:

Good Luck with filing bro. Oh and I googled some info on class action lawsuits, because I am a lawyer now too.

"Filing and fighting a lawsuit can cost a great deal of money. For the average person, that can place justice out of their reach." Judging by the issues to fill up the truck I am going to GO OUT ON A LIMB (uh thank you) and say this is out of reach.

Poor is a relative term ;) seriously if you’re having an issue with your v8 and we find a fix it may help put some change back in your pockets, never know!

Well, on top of regular expenses I have my student loan and truck to pay off on an apprentice mechanic salary so i'm definately not rich, lets put it that way.

As for the mpgs, I have never calculated mine because I don't really worry about it. I knew what I was getting into with a V8. I drive with 265/70's and a Volant CAI rather aggressively and my truck computer says 14mpg so I just switch it to outside temp and don't think about it.

Don't take this as a personal hit, it's more of a hit to all people who sue for ridiculous things...I gotta ask, WTF??? It's because of people like you COFFEE cups have to say "CAUTION CONTENTS ARE HOT"...yah no s*** it's f***ing coffee. It's just a waste of your own tax dollars.

One can obtain "real" gasoline from an oil company that sells more products than just on-highway formulations. If they sell dyed off-road diesel and bulk kerosine, odds are good they sell other special-purpose formulations of gasoline as well, including straight gasoline. But the difference in oxygenated fuel shouldn't amount to much more than a 4% decline in mileage, and unless things have changed, it wouldn't apply to a summer blend.

So, a look at a tire comparison calculator shows that the difference in the 265/70R17 diameter alone (compared to stock) is probably going to make a 3.4% difference in the speedo-too-slow/mileage-too-low. Not huge, but add the factors of how aggressive the tread is, the sidewall flex, and so on, that might just be the bulk of the problem.

I just wonder what the specific timeline is, based on Ronsta's quotes from throughout the thread, these are the pieces:

Fixed milestone: There were 3 good years of 420+ mileage ranges.

Floating milestone: Mileage went bad.

Floating milestone: Oversize tires were installed.

So, when was that? Was it before the noticeable decline in mileage, some time after the decline in mileage, or right about the same time there was a decline in mileage?

Or, if there have been different brands of the oversize tires installed over the years, maybe the current ones just suck for fuel economy because they have M+S tread? A big variable like this can't just be brushed-off.

So, I'm a computer tech. A ridiculously high percentage of the problems I troubleshoot originated between the chair and keyboard. My first question is almost always, "Has anything changed on your computer?" "Oh, I (made some change), BUT IT SHOULDN'T MAKE A DIFF" is the typical answer. Yes, yes it does make a difference, it's usually the source of the problem as to why the computer is slow or not fully operational.

I don't want to be too condescending here, but this Problem Exists Between Steering-Wheel and Seat (PEBSWAS) until there's enough info to really say that it doesn't. I think that's all MikeInNH and others have been saying all along.

Anyway, this sort of thing is why I keep a notebook and log all my fuel stops and maintenance. I know what brands & size of tire I installed, and when I did it. I know what they did to my mileage and overall range. If my mileage drops suddenly, I know right away that it's either due a change I just made or a problem.

If you had read this from the beginning I never intended this thread to be about a CAL, merely a suit, that means it’s more general and non specific meaning maybe leading to a small claims case.
Nope...Just a Director or Software Development for a small Telecom company. It doesn't take much to do a google search to find out what it takes for a Class Action Lawsuit. Took me all of 20 seconds.
A Director huh? Albeit not for a big time telecom company, that’s very impressive! You’ve given yourself a little leeway to wriggle out of in case you’re not what you claim to be. Law 101 covers CALs, no google needed but it helped you out so kudos. Oh yes, posting this at 11:23am means a bit of time wasted at work don’t you think? Or maybe you called out today?
If you do..then why did you mention the part about the other driver's range indicator. It's one or the other isn't it??
I take the Range & the MPG displayed on the trip comp as two separate values to be verified by a hand calc.
You are NOT going to win this....Give it up. If you think you're getting burned..then sell the 4runner and move on. You'll spend more money in legal fees pursuing this then any loss money because of the suspected decreased gas mileage.
Who said anything about spending $ on legal fees? Think outside the box my friend. As a “DIRECTOR” you should have the capacity to do so.

Ronsta just got owned.
Whatever you say Clockwork, I think your moniker suits you just right.
Hang this in your cubicle. ****, you could drive it inside and park it next to your desk.
Looks like a great vehicle. I’ll take this into consideration. Thanks!

That’s why you buy at home depot, 1 year guarantee.

So you know that LI is near NYC… wow, that makes you an expert on anything related to NYC ehh?

Good Luck with filing bro. Oh and I googled some info on class action lawsuits, because I am a lawyer now too.
So is it the fact that because you’re a lawyer that you googled CALs or…what are you saying?

"Filing and fighting a lawsuit can cost a great deal of money. For the average person, that can place justice out of their reach." Judging by the issues to fill up the truck I am going to GO OUT ON A LIMB (uh thank you) and say this is out of reach.

It’s great that you know how to quote a source, not so great that your logic seems to infer that if one has $ to burn and can afford to, then s/he should do it. And thus state of our economy.

So you know what I’m talking about, every penny counts doesn’t it? If those pennies could be had at the pump they would add up over time no?
As for the mpgs, I have never calculated mine because I don't really worry about it. I knew what I was getting into with a V8. I drive with 265/70's and a Volant CAI rather aggressively and my truck computer says 14mpg so I just switch it to outside temp and don't think about it.
Hiding the fact by not displaying it and not thinking about it doesn’t mean it’s not a problem.
I agree, putting hot coffee betw. Ur legs & then suing for it is ridiculous. I guess one could say about both situations that, “it’s your own goddamn fault”; the former example b/c you put the coffee cup there and the latter b/c I bought an SUV therefore I should expect it, am I right? If so then shouldn’t expect the range/mileage that they claim? Fine it’s a little old & old machines wear out… so tell me what’s wrong with the damn thing so I can fix it!! (This is where a CEL would come in handy and I’d be fine with it)

But the difference in oxygenated fuel shouldn't amount to much more than a 4% decline in mileage, and unless things have changed, it wouldn't apply to a summer blend.

I tested this winter blend theory for over a year so seasons have changed unless the gas came from the north pole.

So, a look at a tire comparison calculator shows that the difference in the 265/70R17 diameter alone (compared to stock) is probably going to make a 3.4% difference in the speedo-too-slow/mileage-too-low. I agree every little bit counts but losing 100 miles per tank is drastic.

I just wonder what the specific timeline is, based on Ronsta's quotes from throughout the thread, these are the pieces:

Floating milestone: Oversize tires were installed.
So, when was that? Was it before the noticeable decline in mileage, some time after the decline in mileage, or right about the same time there was a decline in mileage?

Mileage went bad & then oversize was installed bc I was in need of new tires for the winter.

Yes, yes it does make a difference, it's usually the source of the problem as to why the computer is slow or not fully operational.

I’m also a techie and I’d like to think I can troubleshoot but I’m no mechanic.

I don't want to be too condescending here, but this Problem Exists Between Steering-Wheel and Seat (PEBSWAS) until there's enough info to really say that it doesn't. I think that's all MikeInNH and others have been saying all along.

Fine, I guess everyone else with heavy mods & better MPGs than myself are feeding their trucks adrenaline shots & steroids? Pls share the secret.

I concur about this.

To the OP, give it a rest. You have a modified 4runner (ie tires) and you're getting less than advertised mileage. Big surprise........

Yup.

Folks like the OP are why I sometimes think we should have a "loser pays all legal costs for both parties" civil lawsuit system, like they do in some Commonwealth countries.

Fine, maybe I'll give it a rest but what about my 2 friends (real people, not from the interwebs) whose trucks are totally stock and well maintained? Should they just give it a rest also and bend over?

M1911, your handle infers you like guns right? Specifically a .45 caliber ? I might be taking a stab here but maybe you like defending yourself and your freedoms? Well so do I & that's the reason I served the good old US of A. At what point in time would those who suffer bad MPGs have a right to say something, when they get really really bad ie 5 MPG ?

Letting big business take advantage of the consumer isn't the answer.

OK I am going to give it a rest.....

So anyways, my MPG suck!

........hahahahaha this is great.

WOW....2...There were over 100k sold...and so far you've found 2.

If you had read this from the beginning I never intended this thread to be about a CAL, merely a suit, that means it’s more general and non specific meaning maybe leading to a small claims case.

YOUR the one who said you wanted to get other people involved in the lawsuit. That automatically makes it class-action. When two or more people bring a lawsuit. How many times are you going to start back-peddling.

Oh yes, posting this at 11:23am means a bit of time wasted at work don’t you think?

Since I sit in front of a computer all-day long...it's not much of an effort. And I wouldn't even begin to talk to me about work hours....I seriously doubt you put in 70+ hours a week....which I've been AVERAGING...You don't get in this position without putting in many hours.

Who said anything about spending $ on legal fees? Think outside the box my friend. As a “DIRECTOR” you should have the capacity to do so.

YOU DID. NY State doesn't have a legal free system. You have to pay to file (even in small claims court). And OBVIOUSLY you don't have anywhere near the legal expertise to take this on yourself so that means you'll have to hire a lawyer. There's not a lawyer in the world who'll take THIS on for free....If there was they would have found you.

Give it up...you haven't a clue.

If it helps, my 2003 V8 Limited gets 16 MPG in town and 20 on the highway.

I noticed about a 2 MPG improvement when I replace my over sized swapper tires for "wife friendly" stock sized all seasons street tires...

No one with an over sized tire combination should be making any issue about mileage.

Okay, so now there's a little bit of a timeline that would indicate that the decrease happened prior to the tire change. That's something.

Then the question is, what sort of things cause a vehicle to perform reasonably well for 3 years and then start sucking?

I would have trouble saying it's entirely Toyota's fault (unless there's a slow-to-show defect), since it obviously wasn't a problem from the start (as was the Civic Hybrid woman's complaint), but the usual things I'd think of are:

--Under-inflated tires.
--Failed gas cap, or other maintenance item.
--Stuck & dragging brake or a bad bearing (things that keep the wheels from turning easily).
--Stuck injector or other fuel system problems
--Damaged engine
--Drivetrain issues

The first is really easy to eliminate, so I'd assume it has been.

The second is relatively cheap, and a regular maintenance item that's often overlooked. Occam's Razor would predict this is a strong possibility, if a mechanical problem is to blame. This item might also cover weird stuff like searching for a rodent nest somewhere in the air intake or front fender that's obstructing the intake.

Sticky wheels should be easy to diagnose, but could be tricky if the problem is intermittent or the problem only occurs when there's weight on the wheels.

The rest of those issues would likely require a mechanic to go through the truck, system by system, just checking to make sure everything is the way it should be.

So on the gas cap thing, I'm wondering if I might need to pay attention to myself (thanks to the reminder by way of another thread on here), since I was thinking about that last night and didn't notice the satisfying hiss when I loosened my cap to get gas. Holy crap, I can't remember the last time I heard that hiss. I know my mileage went straight down the crapper a few weeks back when the cap was actually very loose. I didn't receive any warning from the CEL, but I lost a lot of miles on my range. I keep putting-off replacing the cap, and my T4R is 8 years old now. They grow-up so fast.

Then there are the external factors, such as different driving habits, different type of driving (e.g., off-peak city, highway, mountain routes, being stuck on the road during rush hour). Mods would fit here too. I don't know that it's that folks with heavy mods don't get bad mileage, I'm guessing it's that they just don't care.

Ronsta, what things have you already done to eliminate as potential sources of the problem? I'm going to say the key is to have something concrete, which requires getting everything that's "not the problem" out of the way.

One such thing would also be polling others who have the same size & brand tire to see what mileage they get. Then you at least have an idea how much that is going to affect fuel economy.

Define the cause. Then, if it's a common and inexcusable defect, then we talk lawsuit or at least start bugging Toyota to issue a recall like they did for that Taco frame rot.

Ronsta: you still haven't 100% determined WHAT is causing your mpg to fall off a cliff. Have you done what others suggested?? How about going back to OEM sized tires to DEFINITIVELY determine that the tires aren't eating at your mgps????

Small claims? The "Honda Civic lady in CA" is your inspiration? Apples and oranges man. In that case, the difference was like 20-30 mpgs. THAT'S A TON of difference and the lady didn't mod her car at all. In any event, that just tells me you want the max allowed ($10k), b/c with a CAL, you get jack (paying the jag off lawyers). You just want to milk the system. This is what its sounding like. If so, you've lost my respect.

I honestly hope you DO get to the bottom of your mileage problems, but this isn't the answer. Also: Your friends are giving ya bad advice.
