Alright guys well I have a 1999 4runner sr5 v6 2wd and it only has 130,000 miles on it, but i just drove down to corpus from Austin and once i got here i am hearing a pretty loud clunk when I shift from reverse to drive and it does jerk the vehicle but not much I am just concerned at why its making such a loud pop or clunk

when was the last time the transmission fluid and filter was done?

First thing though - pop the radiator cap and look at the coolant ASAP. If it looks milky pink then read this immediately, and don't drive another mile until resolved.

Corpus is about a 3-4 hour drove from Austin Curt, if he's got the strawberry milkshake that far from home I feel bad for him..... Anywa, I'm in SA if you need any help bro. Check the tranny fluid, DEX2 I believe if you're low. If you open the radiator cap and see pink milkshake like curt said, doNOT drive it.

If you also feel it when you brake and accelerate from a stop it could be the "driveshaft clunk" that happens when the driveshaft needs greasing. If it's that it would only be annoying not alarming though....

thank yall all for getting back to me i just drove back from corpus and got into austin about 20 minutes ago, the vehicle drove fine so im guessing its not the pink milkshake which i am still gonna check out tho, it did seem to vibrate when i hit the accelerator the whole time i drove back so im going to go check the radiator and coolant and i will get back to yall,

ok so the coolant is pinkish looking but it is defiantly not thick or look similar to a milkshake its pure liquid so thats good, transmission fluid was decent it could use a little more but its within the range. i guess the drive shaft just needs to be greased then? im not to sure i guess ill have to take it to toyota soon

id be taking a close look at the driveline/ujoints.

I would also suspect the U-joints. I had this issue on my 2wd, and mine did NOT have zerk fittings to grease so they had to be replaced. The symptoms mine showed were a loud clunk that could also be felt when shifting to either reverse or drive. Also had a bad vibration that would shake the entire truck and was audible, getting worse with speed. When inspecting the ujoints, there was a decent amount of play and when I had someone shift it, I could see rust dust knocked loose when it would clunk. Hope that's all it is and good luck

Well, I had taken it to a shop to have the repair done. I assumed they changed both out while they had it all apart. I was wrong. A few weeks later the other one crapped out....4 hrs from home....on a Saturday. So I had to take it to the dealer there, which they thought they had the part but actually didn't. So I had to scramble around and get one at a local auto parts store. Needless to say, I've never been back to the original shop. If I remember right, the part was only about $20 each and total being like $150....twice.
