Pop-Up Conversion

The one we had was a Ursa Minor brand. Not a big tent though.

Yeah, Ursa Minor started it with the Honda Element, then started making them for JKs, then Adventure Trailers (AT Overland now) contracted/rebranded. But they were all - at that time - made by Ursa Minor. I don't know who makes them now.

I was thinking the same. Sportsmobile cuts out vans for about $12,000 and adds the tent bed up top. I think there would be a market for it here in the US.

I think the pop up conversions work best on the long wheel base troopys. As it stands I don't know that it's a great options for the vehicles we have here in the US. Not enough payload and wheel base on something like a 4Runner or 200 series is too short. In a troopy you have enough space back there for drawers, kitchen, water, electrical and it can carry all that weight well within GVWR. If you tried that in a 4Runner you'd run out of space, weight and payload real quick and the truck would drive/handle like trash.

I emailed Ursa Minor awhile back when I saw they were developing a top for the Ford Bronco and asked if they had considered the 4Runner, and they replied they weren't sure if there was enough demand -- so I'd recommend letting them know if youre interested

if/when they release a top for the Bronco I'll probably be trading in the 4Runner for a Bronco unless the Bronco reliability is dog shit

Thanks for your interest! The timeline is probably delivery set for spring, but of course we’ll see when the vehicles start shipping and plan from that. We have a 2 months of production covered by reservations in place



As far as why – the new Bronco has a removable top so it’s going to be similar in approach to what we do with the Jeeps.



The 4runner is a regular SUV – so either it would have to be cut open (like one of the vans we work on) or with no vehicle modication it would be easier to just get a roof top tent than a conversion. We get requests about the 4Runner but not a lot. Of course the original 4Runner had the removable rear top, but those are pretty rare now!

Saw an Earth Roamer on a trial in CO once, I'm almost 100% it was a factory test mule. It seemed to be doing ok. Did I mention it costs more than a nice house in 99% of the country?

I saw an Earthroamer roll through Sedona once and about spit my coffee. My wife wanted one until I showed her the pricing.

I inquired with Ursa last fall and they told me the same thing. I even offered my 4Runner up as a test vehicle. Too bad cause I think it would be a good conversion for my wants.

I tossed out the idea of making a Campteq 4runner conversion on their Instagram.

They responded, saying its possible, but they're focused of finishing up the rest of their LandCruiser line first.

I think if we got serious, put together a list of like 10-15 serious buyers, they might be willing to make a camper conversion for the 5th gen 4runner.
