Pop-Up Conversion

Anyone seen or heard of anyone that already has or has a pop-up conversion in the works? I know theyre fairly popular on the various LCs especially in other countries, but they do seem to be somewhat popular here on Wranglers and even on the Honda Element. This would be the ideal setup for me as it would give the ability to stand inside out of the elements as well much more livable space.

I eventually settled for an ultra low profile roof top tent from Go Fast Campers.

We had a Wrangler here with one of the camper tops. It was cool but not all that much better than a roof top tent. There were two panels that you had to remove to get in and out and had to climb up through the back seat area.

That’s just a standard roof top tent similar to what GFC has out. The OP is looking for a conversion where the tent is actually incorporated as part of the roof. So the interior of the 4Runner becomes a living space.

Personally - I don't like them very much. You end up with a crappy camper and a crappy offroader. If you were living alone in your 4Runner, it might work. But even then - there's just a lot of other alternatives that would end up being better campers and probably also better offroaders.

I tend to think if you're going to build an offroad camper, I'd choose either a Tundra, Powerwagon, or maybe an F450 and build one with a lot more room. If not - I'd look at a trailer or tacoma with a wedgetail camper. Short wheel based midsize camper conversions don't make a ton of sense to me as far as worth the effort and cost to build.

A Tundra with the PCOR system like the Expedition Overland guys did would be sweet. Awning over the side for standing if you want to stand. Roop top tent on top.

Storage, Fridge, Water tank, lights, charging, drop down kitchen, etc all right there.

Saw an Earth Roamer on a trial in CO once, I'm almost 100% it was a factory test mule. It seemed to be doing ok. Did I mention it costs more than a nice house in 99% of the country?

I was thinking the same. Sportsmobile cuts out vans for about $12,000 and adds the tent bed up top. I think there would be a market for it here in the US.

I had one of these from 2013 to 2017. Daily drove it on my 4-door Wrangler.

Drove down from WA, top installed at in AZ, drove to MA.

The idea was nice, but the execution wasn't great. I was also an early adopter. They don't make it for the 4-door wrangler anymore. The replacement top was heavy AF. 300lb extra. Main issues were with seals and leaking. If you do a lot of camping in the back country and don't have to deal with a lot of rain, they were great.

I sold my Jeep and bought a Mini while I did some research into which 4x4 I'd buy next. Sold the Mini, bought my 4Runner.

The one we had was a Ursa Minor brand. Not a big tent though.
