Popping in my steering wheel ?

I was running over some rocky terrain and my steering wheel kept popping. It doesnt do it on paved roads. We all know how when your on some unforgiving terrain our steering wheels want to go left to right. When my wheel did that it would make a knocking popping sound. What is it guys?

I have the same thing... I was optimistic that changing out some suspension related compontents would correct the "popping and knocking" sound, but so far I have struck out.

I have changed out the steering rack guide, my LBJ's, and my outter tie rods. At this point about the only thing left I can think of are the inner tie rods and have been contemplating doing the entire steering rack as that comes with the rods.

Honestly I only hear it when I wheel my Runner and it is very annoying, but on the other hand I am not taking it out every weekend... so the impact is a half dozen times a year. Regardless if I could narrow it down inexpensively I would love to.

Hopefully this thread elicits some other ideas...

Sounds like we're in the same boat. I thought LBJ's also but if it didn't fix yours I'm betting it won't fix mine. I don't wheel alot either but when I do I would like to enjoy it more. That knocking sound is annoying.

if you do a search for steering you should find a few threads on this topic. i recall one where the OP had to modify a clip in the steering column shaft to fix the issue.

I finally got sick of hearing mine too and did this today as well. I took a different route for now... and just taped the crap out of the joint area with electrical tape. My thought was that I'd hone in on this as my problem before either tack welding, or drilling and putting a pin in it. So far, it sure *seems* like it's fixed. My next wheeling trip, or washboard road should be the final test. Here's to hoping...

Haven't tested it off road yet, however I can tell you that I could make the noise anytime I drove down my driveway off the curb to the street and now it is quiet as can be doing that same thing. Hopefully will get it offroad in the next few weeks.

Just wanted to re-post in this thread. I've had my 4Runner offroad a few times on some challenging trails / terrain that would have definitely had my steering popping like mad. The slip joint "fix" was the cure for me! I'm just glad this was a free and relatively simple fix. No more need to throw money and time at other suspension components!

So, all it took was electrical tape? :biggrin2:

10-4... I didn't have the "guts" to tack weld it, or mess with a roll pin. Wrapping it tight in tape seems to keep it solid enough for my truck.

I too did this fix about a month ago. Fixed the loose steering and knocking sound when offroad. Used a 3/32 roll pin.
