I have a '98 4Runner with Tundra TRD coils and Bilstein 5100's up front (adjusted to the second perch, I believe), and OME 890's and Bilstein 5100's in the rear.
While offroading, sometimes when the front left wheel is fully extended and I am accelerating, I will hear a pop-pop-pop sound from the front left. I got out today while it was fully extended and took a good look and couldn't see anything rubbing at all. I looked at the CV boots carefully and they are not torn. I have a 1" diff drop and am estimating about 2" of lift with the TRD set-up the way it is.
When I was installing the coils, I had a hell of a time orienting the coils so that when fully extended, the spindle didn't contact the spring. As far as I could tell, when fully extended the spindle lands somewhere between two coils.
This only seems to happen on the front left, and it's not while the wheel is at full lock or anything. My sway bar end links are stock length but they are intact, and my sway bar bushings, steering rack bushings, inner and outer tie rod ends are all fairly new. When I did my lift I replaced my top-hats.
I also had some noises coming from the rear, also when fully extended. Sounded like the tire was rubbing the fender, but I got out and checked, and it wasn't. My extended bump-stops did their job.
I'm really not sure what it could be, and my only other idea would be to get someone with a two-post lift to lift the vehicle, have the suspension at full-droop, and try to recreate and isolate the sound (although that could be a bit dangerous, if I have it running / turning the wheels while lifted).
Any thoughts?
