Popping under Knee after workout - Slight Sprain?

I don't know if there are any health or medical guru's in here but doesn't hurt to ask.

First a little background info. I've always been active up until the past couple years. Ran track and field as well as cross country in high school and college. Approx. 7 years in all. I've never had any knee issues other than my osgood-schlatters below my left knee. In long distance it would start to bother me a little bit. Never any problems with my right knee though.

I recently decided that I wanted to get back in shape and training for the goal to lose some weight. I started the Insanity program and am in the middle of my 2nd week. On Saturday (the 19th) I noticed that my right knee was slightly popping in the leg, under the knee (ligament/tendon?) It didn't really bother me and there was no swelling so I figured it would go away. Which brings me today, it is still popping and I've noticed it causing some soreness. Only when the knee is slowly bent then extended do I truly notice it. If I'm running or doing it in a hurried fashion it doesn't bother me much (ex: doing a workout doesn't hurt). There is no swelling nor is there any black/blue around the knee.

My question is, did I maybe sprain a ligament or tendon in one of my workouts? I'd hate to sit out a day in the program because it would make me get behind but I don't want it to get worse. Should I start icing it or put a heat pad to it? I took an ice bath yesterday for about 10 min in hopes it would help but haven't noticed it getting any better. What gives??

Thanks for any responses/answers.

I'm experiencing that too..In my case, think its hereditary, my dad's doc used to inject lubricants/steroid(if I'm correct) into his knees.

I believe that as we become older(I'm 39), our joints tend to loose lubricants IMO. I'm taking Move Free daily and when I experience pain and popping knees and hips, I'll avoid eating fatty foods and legumes...beans and alcohol LOL! I wont take ibufrofen as an easy fix, it might damage my lever. :) and yeah, ice is better than warm compress.

I have had my knees make a slight popping sound in the past. no pain though.

I just ran 4 miles (@33 mins) and no popping so I assume past popping was temporary.

I have also heard there is now strong evidence that cracking your knuckles does not lead to arthritis. So perhaps popping does not equal "about to fail somehow" ; It is not that simple.

I would suggest you Google this whole knee popping thing but the results will surely tell you that you have Cancer of the Knee.

Sorry bro. :ybrick:

(because all internet diagnosis are cancer)

Do the Insanity workouts require you to do any twisting motion with your knee? When I read your first post it sounded similar to the knee problem I had last year, but my pain was in the front, right at the base of the knee cap.

Popping in your knee is pretty common. What you need to keep an eye out for is instability and/or if your knee catches or locks on bending or extending. I'm certainly no doc, but I've gone through 4 knee surgeries and currently holding off on a 5th.

Not really.. The biggest thing with Insanity is keeping your form and workig from your core, keeping it tight. There is a lot of jumping with plyometric type workouts, and bending the knee is required a lot. Keepin form is important, however you can't keep from twisting in form a little here and there.

While popping in the knee is common, this issue is not. It's slightly painful but causing more discomfort than anything. There is some soreness involved. I'm afraid if I keep working out it will get worse but I don't want to get behind.

You might have a slight meniscus tear. If so, you want to get it handled sooner than later otherwise you can make the tear worse or beat it up to where the only option is to remove part of it.

Do you have medical insurance? If so, go in and get an MRI on it.

Did a little research on torn menisci.. Sounds pretty accurate. Can take up to 2 weeks to heal if not severe. Guess I'll have to proceed with the R.I.C.E. method for a litte bit. If it doesn't get better I'm going to the Dr. I hate wearing a knee brace, blaaaaa......

BTW, thanks Hepar and others for the information.

Yeah, hopefully it will heal up on its own. It can be tricky because that area of the knee doesn't get much blood flow. They've had to take out parts of mine in both knees. Sucks because now I've got arthritis in both.

But zero shoulder issues! Those I think are the big ones to avoid.

Played football and ran CC in HS and have had this popping in my right knee for as long as I can remember.

ARK, you're just getting old brother and you need to back off on the work out.
Take it easy and a nice oriental nurse with "happy fingers" does wonders.

I'm not a real doctor but do play one on TV.
